Default Rear package tray

Hi everyone. I recently ordered a rear package tray from Ames which arrived yesterday. I began the install this morning. I saw that this item was made by R.E.M. and appeared to be quite nice. Good quality and appearance. My only issue was, that it was much too long. I must have trimmed this for the better part of an hour, taking off a little at a time. No exaggeration, I bet I took off 1.5 inches from each end. Wish I had the old one for a template, but I didn't. I have to go back to the Ames catalog and see how they describe this. I don't recall them mentioning trimming would be necessary. I thought it would fit like a glove right out of the box, but it doesn't. I finally got it trimmed properly to lay nicely, and it does look good. Just a little awareness for everyone, Carmine.

I went through the same thing with mine. Not even close to fitting. I think I had to trim about 1/2" from either end and radius the corners to fit.

Hope you didn't cut too much, that package tray needs to extend under the back glass rubber as far as you can push it or it isn't going to stay flat. I've never had to trim one.

I trimmed what I had to, a little at a time, and I like fit/appearance. Looks nice, Carmine.

Sorry Roy, but I have the car put away for the Winter. What I can tell you though, as you try to fit it, you might discover that it is too long. Mine was binding on the sides as I tried to slide it on the metal frame. Mine had a serious bow in it. I tried to make sure it was centered properly, and then using shears, I cut a little from both ends. Very little at a time until the fit improved. Once you cut it, you can't put it back so be careful. It took several small cuts, but I finally got it to fit nicely. I think the depth was fine; just the sides needed attention, Carmine.

You may very well be correct. I bought mine through Ames, Carmine.

I got mine from Ames also. When i installed it there were score lines on both sides. I folded the ends up (under sail panel trim) and it fit perfect, no trimming needed. When i removed the factory sail panels, there were pieces of the original package tray underneath them.

I bought one of the mesh package trays from PY before they closed. It fit perfect... no cutting at all and no warping once in.

I saved my OG one for size/speaker hole temp. I couldn't find a Camel one, no one had it. I ended up getting one from a Chevy parts place locally, shipping was too much on the oversize item. Then i found a nOS one. So I gotta do it all over some day. Or just sell the nOS one. Chances of finding a GM OG was slim I thought.
Rule-save all old parts, just get rid of wives Lol

All... I have pulled out several original package trays from untouched parts cars and from my 69 Grand Prix and found that the ends of the package tray (by the sail panels) need to be bend UP at a 90° angle to be tucked underneath the bottom of the sail panel. If your headliner & sail panel are already installed, YES you have to trim the ends of the package tray to fit. If there is anyway you can remove the bottom of the sail panel and tuck the package tray under it, you're golden. I've bought and installed several package trays and each one fit fine. My only gripe is the speaker holes in the mesh package tray are not lined up with the speaker holes in the metal shelf. That's not Ames' problem... it's REM's.
