Default Took my valve covers off. What is this?

Hey I took valve covers off to replace them and saw this sitting at the bottom with some of the oil. What in the world is this?

Part of a wire clamp that retains a valve seal.

You might want to get one of the oil drain plugs that has a magnet in the middle of the plug to see if it catches anything.

you need to find the other piece...if it travels its the death Nell for the engine..it would make me stop and really consider stop running it till i figured out where it went.. could be inside the valve spring still

From lying in the head the only place it can really go is down an oil drain back hole, and on the way down to the pan I can't think of any place where it could cause any kind of major problem. Maybe there is a one in a million chance it could find it's way to the cam/dist gears ... but doubtful.

Not like it got dropped into an intake ... now that would be a problem.

I'd be more concerned with finding the seal it came from to check for further damage to the seal, and to replace if necessary.

Not good news. I had my mechanic look at it and there was nothing observed out of the ordinary

I wouldn't worry about it.
Chances are very, very high that if the other half of that clip is still in the engine it has washed down into the pan where it will sit for eternity without causing a problem.

I am not knowledgeable with the inner workings of a motors, what exactly was this piece holding together? Like should I expect a rocker arm to come flying off soon?😞

Probably something similar to this. Some how the clip broke in half and fell off the seal.

Have you noticed any blue smoke from your exhaust lately?

They sit on top of each valve stem preventing oil from being sucked into the combustion chamber during the intake stroke.

With the valve springs in place, they are very hard to see.
