All of a sudden, my '71 Firebird (350) is running very rough. Starts fine. Idles great at first. After about 10 seconds, it gets real rough, like a plug wire is off. After about 30 seconds there is a voltage surge at which time the left dash blinker light comes on and the tach quit working (like when the dash is not grounded well). It goes through this sequence with every fresh start.
My car has the original points iginition. Points, condenser, distributor cap, and coil are all new or fairly new. Thanks for the help. |

i'd start with the ground from the engine to the chassis, and the engine to the body. the dash problem points to this. also check for a body to chassis ground. all the connections should be clean and tight . mike

Thanks for the info. Could a bad ground cause a poor running engine?
Where is the engine/body grounded on a '71 Firebird? To my knowledge, there is no grounding strap. Thanks again. |

the ground ,or lack of it will cause voltage drops/spikes. this will cause ign problems . there should be a strap from the back side of one of the cyl heads [probably the pass side] to the firewall. and on some models there will be a strap from the frame/subframe to the support where the front body mount rides on the pass side.
