Currentlly in the middle of a frame off on a 60, does anyone know or remember if the third member in the rearend was painted black, or came in primer from the factory? or came natural finish?

Had a guy who has done several frame offs on 61's and 62's claim the third members were primer.

Anyone know for sure?

Not a 100% sure but believe they were in Red Oxide primer.
I have pulled quite a few rears that were in primer from parts cars.

That is my understanding for those years as well, but don't know if it also applies to 1960.

The rears I pulled were from 60's....
I have a 4.88 posi in shop that was pulled years ago...it's primer.
Don't see any signs of it being black...
Believe it came from the original (real) Arapaho that I found years ago...
It hadn't been on track for eons..

A buddy of mines 62's were all red primer.

I have a 62 Catalina unrestored original, complete third member is black. I had a 59 Catalina 420A that my dad bought new and later (from 1967) I owned. The car came with a 3.08 Posi and for racing we had special ordered a 3.90 and a 4.10. posi. On that car the housing was black as well as the 3.08. The 3.90 and the 4.10 out of the box were red oxide covered in a black tacky coating we today would normally call cosmoline.
