Default Salvaging the Concordia

Not sure how many may have interest here but, I find it very interesting. Have always had interests in various salvage operations but, I will be especially watching this one.

They plan to anchor the ship with cables so it does not slide further into the sea.
Then, build a platform under it and weld metal boxes to the port side of her.
2 cranes will be mounted to the platform and pull on the ship to right it.
The port metal boxes will be filled with water to aid in righting the Concordia.
After the ship is righted, more metal boxes will be attached to the starboard side. then the water will be pumped out of the boxes to make the ship bouyant. There are no plan to repair the sides of the ship to float it but, depend on the boxes to do all of that.

This is quite a job for sure.

I heard that it's going to be scrapped after it's relocated. Do you know if this is true?

Everything I have read says so. I cannot understand why they waited so long to 'get going' on raising it.

About other ships salvaged- righting the USS Oklahoma was very interesting too and that was 60 years ago. It was righted and sold for scrap. While being towed by tug to the mainland for scrapping, it sank.

With all the costs involved I still can't see scrapping it. Seems like returning the ship to service would be more economical.

In some cases, salvage co's with lots of expertise will remove a ship that has run aground for free. This is in return to all salvage rights to the sunken vessel's marketable "assets" aka scrap value.

I met a guy on a plane once and that was his business. IIRC, he bid on mostly decommissioned navy ships.

Don't forget these ships have miles upon miles of copper wire.

This plan seems over engineered.

I don't imagine anything that's below water level, other than anything metal, is any good now to salvage. Besides, you know what fish do in water, and I can only imagine the number of fish inside searching around for something to eat. Hell, it's a tourist attraction for the fishies now.

The "Blue Marlin" would be good for this type job, there is also the "Black marlin" if two are needed across it.

In a previous career I worked on installing nav equipment on yachts.

Most owners don't want to the wear and tear taken on the boat so they pay to have them transported to Europe.

That's how it's done on a smaller scale. Larger ship takes on water to "sink", the boats are floated on and tied off. Then under water welders weld "stands" to hold the boats once the ballast is pumped out.

They then hook up electricity and sea water pipes so the a/c can be run in the yachts. One or two crew members make the crossing to deter anyone from stealing the valuables on board.

Well. it is time to wake up this post for those interested. They plan to right the Concordia in the coming hours. It says nothing this large has even been attempted and there is only one chance at it. We'll see...

There's probably a lot at stake here like money, reputations and safety to name a few.

Thanks for the alert Steve.
i had forgotten all about that boat .

Didn't know it had only been at sail for 3 hours when it happened .
And they say it has compressed approx 10 feet since sitting .
Lots of things going on inside it i never thought about too .

i wish them all the luck in the world

If anyone finds a good real time link or anything please share .
Sound effects should be crazy .

The time lapse will be wild to see when its all done
