Default Axle bearing installation information request

Good afternoon all,

I am rebuilding the rear axle in my 1970 Judge and was doing some pre-assembly fitment checks and need some advice/assistance regarding the installation of the retaining ring that installs between the oil seal and axle bearing. My axles have the A9 bearing and 2146 oil seal. The service manual indicates the order of assembly for the axle bearing installation as follows;

bolt on retainer plate
oil seal
retaining ring
bearing-press on
inner retainer-press on

I am unable to determine which way the retaining ring should be installed. The service manual is not clear other than saying the retaining ring points down (not sure what that means). It seems that either way I install the ring (step side towards bearing or inside taper towards bearing) it binds on the bearing cage. (I have not yet pressed the bearing on to the axle, I am checking the fit in the housing with the old bearing, race and seal.)

I removed the axles from another rear end assembly for comparison, the step side of the ring was installed pointing towards the bearing....but it had pushed onto the bearing cage and appeared to have been rubbing on the bearings....so that was really no help

I will try to upload some photos, any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jeff

Default Hello

that 3rd picture doesnt look right

the vent/relief looks to be toward the backing plate !! to me...

it should be turned around ,,,
its a vent/drain and should curve out towards the tire ...the gap towards the backing plate ....

Thanks Scott....to make sure I understand you....are you referring to the part of the retainer plate I circled? if so, that is just the angle of the pic.

The ring I am referring to is in pic 2 (on the bearing cage) and pic 3 (off the bearing cage), pic 4 is from the service manual. The oily axle in the pics is just a spare I had lying around that I pulled to see how the ring between the seal and the bearing was installed......it doesn't look right to me, the ring was pushed over the bearing cage and rubbing on the end of the bearings.

Here are some more pics

Pic 1 shows the race, the bearing, the retaining ring and the seal

No matter which way I install the "retaining ring" it binds on the bearing cage and does not leave enough room for the seal to seat in the axle housing

Pic 2 shows the parts assembled with the retaining ring shoulder towards the seal

pic 3 assembled with the shoulder towards the bearing

Pic 4-the bearing and ring in the axle housing-shoulder towards the seal....not much room for the seal and when installed it causes the ring to bind on the cage.

YouŽll need to install the bearing the proper way.
1. Retainer plate.
2. Seal.
3 Press on bearing, with the manufacturers printed name/part-# up, towards the axle spline and retaining ring towards the seal.
4. Press outer retainer.

Jobs done!

Default hmmmmm

here is my used 71 72 axle

what I see is your new bearing carrier/cage looks deeper than the originals
the cage looks longer between the bearing end and the end/side of the cage
near the ring your concerned about...

you may measure them ... what brand are they ??

Thanks Scott....after some more fiddling around with the bearings I was able to snap the retainer ring over the cage.....where it is supposed to be......everything fits as it is supposed to now....aorry to waste your time for something so trivial......but I certainly appreciate your help.
