Trunk Spatter Paint
What is the correct color combo for a 73 Firebird, and who is the best source for it.
Thanks, Chris

Inside Trunk
I'll take a picture (original trunk) and post it for you today.
Eastwood makes a good repro from what Ive heard, and looks pretty close. Alot of it is how its applied, and where. Later, Brewster Last edited by Brewster; 07-04-2007 at 09:26 AM. |

Part's Place has the best match and it comes in a quart. It is not water based like the cheap rattle can stuff. I used it for my 73 T/A.

Watch out when you buy it!!!. I have to redo my 72 trunk. If I remember I was supposed to spray it with a clearcoat afterwards. It's all peeled now. Dang it looked good!

It's the Black/Aqua - right?
Eastwood has the kit with 3 cans of spatter, and 2 cans of clear for less than $50. Also, I notice that it goes most of the way up the divider panel, I'm guessing that it gets sprayed on before the lights are installed so I should either mask those off or remove them and the harness. Should I red-oxide primer first for the correct effect? Anything else I'm missing?

I did my trunk with the rattle can stuff, aqua, and it took like 14-16 cans to do the 71 LeMans. Then about another 7 cans of clear to cover it right. I used 3M wheels to clean the entire area, coated with POR-15, waited 2 weeks and shot the splatter. I just did the 71 T/A, and think it took like 8 cans to do the trunk, and 5 cans of clear. Hold the can about 18" or so away, at about a 45 degree angle, and cover using a cross-hatch pattern to get the proper texture. Keep the angles and motion constant for best results. If you get too close, it will 'push' the coating into piles or waves. Too far away will not give the desired texture. It took like 3 days for the splatter to dry since it was a little cold, and there's not much air movement in the trunk.

Just painted it - didn't even use two cans and it looks really good but the cans were a b***h - kept spitting and plugging, but it did end up coming out even. Only went part way up on the side quarters - let it fade into the primer - same on the dividing panel behind the rear seat. I'll post a picture when I can pull it out into some decent light.
How long should I wait to clear it? Would 24 hours be enough?

Hm, maybe I went too thick then. I'll go back over my invoice and see how many I ordered, but I swear I use a butt load of cans. I know for a fact I called about the A-body one, because I thought the cans were not full or something, didn't think it would take that much. Gimme a min and I'll shoot a couple pics of the '71 T/A trunk that I did like 4 weeks a go....2 cans, dam...

Oh, on the clear, wait until your absolutely sure the splatter is dry. I did mine in Jan/Feb, and like I said, it was cold, so it took a while for it to dry. Touch the edges and if it feels cold or wet, wait....

Well, I didn't go as high on the quarters as I remembered, guess it's an age thing! (No comments from the peanut gallery please!). I did go high on the rear panel though.....

Might look a little dark because I did POR-15 on the bare metal underneath...

Mine looks like that - the guy I bought it from had painted the trunk black - so I just went over that and painted up to the primer overspray line in the quarters and on the filler panel. Seriously, I'm thinking I have enough in the two cans and the third full one to do the trunk in my 72, of course I haven't looked in it in two years so it may not need anything other than a good cleaning.

Not sure what the heck I did wrong then, maybe went way to thick or something! Now I did have the entire trunk stripped to metal before I started, might have something to do with it. I'm thinking I either got a bad batch of cans or went to thick, so when I get a chance, I'm going to scrape a little and see just how thick it is. Right after i finish this margarita! Also, I noticed that you have to really push on the nozzle to make sure it doesn't clog or chunk, not sure if you had that experience...

See the pic I posted, the one on the left? See towards the edge there on the left it starts looking light, like the black is showing through? I think I could have eeven gone another can! And if I'd have gone 2/3s the way up the quarters, probably another can! Or maybe I'm just calculating wrong or something! Maybe after the first can ot two I start getting a buzz or something and EVERYTHING looks light!! Spots! Arrg!
