I just purchased a 1972 and have the PHS but cannot decode the trans code: 35G for $231.00 ?
and the #654 custom trim group, what did this include? and the 361 safe-t-track cost 66.00 vs. the more normal 44.00?

The car is a 400/L-78 car, how many made with the 35G trans?

It also is an SPS paint car for 113.00 which was black. Thanks for all the help, I am glad to be on board!

Welcome to the board! Cool car!

The 35G has gotta be a Muncie (not sure if wide ratio or close), & the 361 Safe-T-Track, is the HD 4 pinion 8.2 posi. W/o a/c, I'm betting 3.55's for gearing. Have never seen a set of factory installed 3.90's since a very early '71 400 close ratio 4spd GT-37, so will not have 3.90's.

The custom trim group, not sure if the nicer interior with the straps on the doorpanels or if it is a light group(?). LLoyd has a '72 dealer album & should be a long to shed better light on this.

Located a manual that states 35E as the wide ratio and the 35G as M-22, the car does not have air and is a 3:55 rear.
1. How does the M-22 close ratio do with a 3:55 rear? /since most were behind 3:90 or lower?\
2. Anyone know how many L78/M22 cars were built?

1972GTO4speed:

Like oPh said, welcome to the board.

Very nice car, I kind of partial to '72 GTO's (see sig).

I'm glad oPh e-mailed me regarding this topic. I'm having SO much fun since I found my long-lost '72 dealer album!

On your questions:

The 35G transmission is indeed the close ratio UPC code M22 (35G order code) "rockcrusher" 4 speed manual. On the '72 LeMans and GTO it was available only with the UPC L78 (34S) 400 4V and the UPC LS5 (34X) 455HO engines.

I haven't been able to find any reference to the 654 order code yet. I'll keep looking. More info may help. For instance, is it a post coupe (2D27) or a hardtop coupe (2D37) body style? IS it equipped with a bench seat, or buckets and console? What color interior does it have? Post more info and I'll try to help out.

The 361 order code referes to the UPC G80 locking diff. Like oPh said, if yours is a non-A/C car, it will most likely be equipped with 3.55 rear diff gears. On your PHS invoice, you would see a reference to a 364 order code (UPC G95 or G97) for the "economy" 3.23 axle ratio option if your car was so ordered. A 368 order code (UPC G90 or G92) performance axle ratio option was not available with this engine and trans combination. If your car is equipped with factory A/C, the 3.23 ratio was the only one available with the L78/M22 combination.

Hope this helps,
Lloyd

PS - post some pics for us when you have a chance!

'72 Formula 455 - TH400, 3.08 posi, A/C, Y99 suspension, tach & gauges, AM-FM stereo, 8-track, Formula steering wheel, etc.; Lucerne Blue with Medium Blue deluxe Interior; 12.96 @ 104 MPH @ the '03 PSN's

Soon I'll starting a body-off restoration on a 72 GTO 455HO, TH400, A/C, etc.; Sundance Orange with Ivory buckets

Lloyd and OPH, Thanks for the help,

My interior code is 276 a black bucket with pull straps on the door. Car was not built with a console (has original carpets and no welded bracket or screw holes) It is a 2D37 coupe.
The option code 654 on the build sheet cost $164.00 retail so it must have been a substantial option?

***Any idea how many were L78/M22 cars?**

It is a no A/C with a 3:55 safe-t-track. Thanks.

The UPC code 654 is for the bucket seat interior. '72 GTO's & other 2 door '72 LeMans w/o this option received the same pleated doorpanels as a '71 T-37, but the std '72 front door panel had a little rectangular LeMans emblem on them. Rear interior panels were same as '71 T-37.

With the option code 654, came the '72 elkgrain(?) all vinyl buckets & matching door panels which had the decorative straps. Same upgraded style carried over to the rear upper panels.

Have never run across a 400 M22 breakout for the '72 GTO's. Commonly avail #'s are, 1519 400 4spd GTO hardtops & 59 400 4spd post GTO's were built for '72. It would prob be safe to bet that less than 15% of these 400 4spd GTO's were close ratio's. The rare WW4 packaged '72 LeMans or GTO would have came with the M22, but cannot ever remember seeing a production total for this option

Hate to say it but, pulled the r/e, rear swaybar, boxed arms, tach & guages, backdrive, pedals, M22, & KR's off just such a rusty wilderness green WW4 '72 GTO back in the late 80's. Had no extra room to store it, & original motor was gone... not smart, I've kicked myself ever since

Sounds like a great 1972 GTO you have. I am partial to a 1972 also as my first 'new' car was a '72 GTO. Very cool to me that you have a factory black car.
I remember a guy in town bought a 1972 Lemans with an endura styling option(GTO nose) brand new that was also special ordered in black. Weird thing about it was, the rubber nose was white not black when delivered new.
