Help identify external regualtor for a new engine harness
Help!
I am ordering a new engine harness for my 67 GTO project from Ames. I have a 1976 Trans Am Engine in my car. So, I have a HEI distributor. Ames needs to know if I have a internal or external regulator. I assume its internal . I know, I know, its the wrong engine for the car. But I want to get it back on the road this summer. Advice welcome. |

I have taken a picture of the distributor and the alternator that came with the engine.
Helpful? |

FWIW, your '67 should use and external regulator. Pontiac went to internal starting with the 1970 model year, if I remember correctly.

So
From your description and the pictures provided. It looks like internal. Ames will custom make a engine harness to fit the 67 dash harness and accommodate a HEI distributor. |

The alternator does appear to have an internal regulator and if you are not concerned about originality, I would definitely recommend using an internal regulator alternator. I think they are generally much more reliable than the external regulators.

...and internally-regulated alternators put out more power at idle/low speed.

Not meaning to be picky, but to qualify what has been said so far, there are OEM internally-regulated alts that have more output than the OEM 10DN alts (externally regulated), so if you will need more output, especially at low RPM, such as for electric fans, stereo amps, might as well go with the internally reg alt like the one you have. IIRC the 10DN OEM alts topped out at 62A. If you need more power, captain, a 10SI 94A from mid 80's Camaro or Monte is on the shelf at your local auto parts and will drop in.

Ok so what you have is a very dependable alternator with more output than the external alternator. Leave it where it is at.
