'Keep your GM car' decals
I'm looking at getting some "Keep your GM car/vehicle.." air cleaner decals printed up due to a few that don't exist. I have all the part numbers and all the codes, not all together, what I don't have without many hours or searching, is a list of what engine combinations have not been done in reproduction decal form, and are actually wanted.
So, to keep it simple, has anyone found that the correct decal they needed was not done? Many ads are wrong. |

Are you following the "Better decals and labels" thread in the Lobby? Some amazing work being done there.

I could use the correct numbered & coded white decals for '77 & '79 W72 4spd cars.
Not sure what's out there from Osborne, I def wasn't impressed with his early '70's emission decal offerings.

The '77 and '79 400 already exist for TA. The decal for '78 W72 not so accurate, at least the commonly advertised version that many display has wrong part number and GM seems to not recognise it in my listings. The 78 version of both possibly uses the 79 label, even though GM says it has its own part numbers. The advertised labels are something again. https://cdn.classicindustries.com/as...mg/D/DT493.jpg https://d2zl5tj7gmc4tr.cloudfront.ne...0117110136.jpg Last edited by Trevor78; 11-27-2023 at 05:05 AM. |

The original one that came on my Y88 400 W72 4 Speed is the one you've posted. Here is a reproduction of the original.

Do they make them for 79 403 Auto cars? I looked thru the Ames catalog and didn't see it.

Fairly common. This is for a 78-79 Trans Am only. Not regular Firebird. Their photo shows a 77 TA. Code is PN.

I figured it was common, but didn't see it in the catalog. I probably missed it.

Thanks Willy, I think it's probably right. That part number is what they used for 79 TA. 78 has a different part number listed, but I've never seen it in use. I can't think of any particular difference to require a new part number either. An original owner could possibly tell if still had original or noted the change. But I have no clue other than reading parts listings. I searched plenty of original photos but are unreadable or mostly missing. I see John W's W72 page mentions 5 different assemblies over the 3yrs, not 4, but no explanation on those and still avoid the 78 TA part number. I don't know what that means, an extra, not used, early change, typo, no idea. An original is best proof. Unfortunately so many online ads are incorrect or use one photo for several and spreads confusion to the next that takes it as fact. Even if the part numbers and codes mean nothing to a buyer, the filter element listed should be of interest if different to theirs, and wonder why.
I see you said your original, you were able to confirm it had the same part number, not just PJ code? Seems to be correct, just leaves more unanswered. |

Yes, my original for the 78 is what they list for the 79. I'll see if I can find the original.

I thought I'd found a manual showing some of the listings with codes for aircleaners. On closer inspection it was the radiator support emission labels with codes and part number. And that's a listed in other manuals anyway. No cigar.

The parts catalog files I have show 8997017 to be used on 78-79 400 W72 optioned Trans Ams. Group 3.402
Box 53 on my build sheet confirms the PJ. Last edited by wheels; 11-28-2023 at 12:13 PM. |

Hmmm...I have that here too. So....what was I even asking or looking at, don't recall!
Many are listing another code and part number as repro decal that doesn't seem to come up in listing. I can't recall, I spend too much time worrying about other people's car and info. You have a Norwood build. The VN cars have their own silly code there with partial of part number attached, but also found a few that don't match this sequence. I also have a '78 W72 with PF decal. There is a repro with PF code, but part number doesn't come up anywhere, or match the partial in this buildsheet either. Oh, the original question, anyone know that their decal isn't correct or not produced?! Seems W72 are fine, although 78 may have a few vague ones thrown in and need to know which one you want but seems are catered for. Last edited by Trevor78; 11-28-2023 at 10:20 PM. |

Mine is a Van Nuys build.
I haven't found the original decal that came off the air cleaner. Not sure if I tossed it after getting the repro one or if a gust of wind blew it away and it's trash. |

Aah all good. Seems half of the VN listings are not clear, or at least have extra details that don't match. Some end in 99 but the part number ends in 89, whereas others match. Another has a TVS switch change that has part number match, but then seems not to in other unusual combinations. So still not fully clear what they mean.
There's a few where 301 and chev shared same codes on buildsheet but not application. Anyway, all just talk that doesn't really go anywhere. |
