How do you remove the starter? 1964 GTO
Trying to get the PITA started for the first time. I think it is cranking too slow. Wouldn't cost much to throw a starter in it. However, the starter can't move back far enough to clear the bellhousing, it bumps into the frame crossmember long before it clears the bellhousing. Do I have to raise the engine to get the starter out?

There should be plenty of room to drop it down AFTER unhooking the battery and removing the 2 wires from the starter: unless someone has added a torq strap (rear support) to the rear bolt on your engine motor mount and attaches to the top thru bolt on the starter motor. That would need to be loosened to give you more room. "Bill"!

1) Remove the Starter Mounting Bolts.
2) Remove the engine mount to rear starter stud bracket 3) Lift the starter UPWARD using the power cable and the nose will clear the bellhousing 4) Drop the starter far enough that you can remove the Battery Cable and Solenoid Wire. 5) Remove the starter. 6 Reverse the operation to reinstall. And then you'll realize why I put an 8lb RobbMc starter on mine.

When I removed mine, I dropped the forward part of it down first rather than pulling it straight down. Came out easily.

Of course disconnecting the battery first might not be a bad idea.
