Scored, Barn Find.
Just brought home another 57-pontiac.
It's a 4-door cheiften sedan 2-barrel. I took a few pictures for ya guy's. I put an old battery in it and every thing works, The heater, horn, lights, radio and even both license plate lites. One light in the front bumpers out, Bad bulb or bad ground maybe. Motor is set up I hope not to bad though. Will see. This car was parked 37 years ago inside it's faired pretty well and I think it will clean up pretty good. Enjoy!!! GT. |

Cool ChieftAIn!
Why does it seem that the '50s cars always lack the air cleaner when they are found?? Looks like cross-country road trip material to this guy! Keep us posted!! |

The breather is in the trunk and I did have to go cross country to get it. Kinda
It was a ways out in the country in a barn at an old dairy farm. exlrate found it on craigs list and told me about it and here it is. Todds got to quit finding these great finds for me. LOL GT. |

Well I worked on the barn find most of the day today.
It's set up pretty good. I saturated all the cylinders and I'm going to let it set for a while and see if I can get it to free up but it's not looking good.!! I might be putting the 287 motor in the 4-door and with the extra347-motor I might be able to put one together out of the two and get the wagon together. I did do some cleaning on the body of the 4-door and was amazed at how well it cleans up so that's what I'll be doing tomorrow. I'll get some more pics up After the cleaning. One way or another I'll be driving one of them if not both This summer. GT. |

Nice find. One of my 55's I found sat for over 10 years, it had 29k on the odometer. I rebuilt the carb and once I realized the point were stuck together fires up and had it running and drove it for about 1/2 mile. I wish I had it the same time as the 41 it would have made a good doner for the 41 since it was in a bad wreck.
If that was mine i'd leave the body alone and just drive it.

Be aware of the rubber components in the fuel lines and carburetor. Today's ethanol will eat them alive. Very cool ride for sure. I agree, clean it up and enjoy it as is/found. Well done.

Almost looks to me that the air cleaner may have been in place for much of its storage time?
Did the carb take much for the throttle to work freely? Looks like a heck of a "find"! All the glass as good as what I can see? Hydramatic?

Got more pictures
Yes this is gona be a driver for me this summer.
Just going to do a little clean up, The chrome even looks good on this thing. The breather was on it for the most. I think he was going to try and get it running that's why the breather was off and then it being set-up he decided to sell it whitch I'm glad he did. It almost fired up tonight, It's getting close. I just can't believe how nice of shape this car is in. Even the interior. I set my super duty scoop on there for a look. What a ya think?? GT. |

Question about the box under the dash: Is that the radio speaker or a heater duct? If it's a speaker box, are all '57s with a radio like that? |

Looks like our 1957 Chieftains share the same grey interior. Very nice. Let me know if you need ideas for the interior. I was able to find a NOS 1958 front rubber floor mat, which kinda sort fit. Still looking for the rest.
Yes, in 1957 the speaker is under the dash bolted to the floor. Ed S 1957 Chieftain Safari 9-pass, 3-sp, 4dr wagon 1966 Bonneville conv. |

For the stuck valve- try both acrylic lacquer thinner and acrylic enamel reducer (not at the same time). Tap lightly with a brass hammer on the valve tip. If you get any movement at all, blow out around the stem with compressed air, then repeat.

Tear It Down Time
I went ahead and pulled the heads, The valves would seat as bad as they are.
It will make it easier to pull the motor with the heads off anyway. I'm going to re-ring it and do a valve job, Probably have to replace some valves to cause they look pretty ruff. Heres some pics of the progress. GT. |

In the early 60's when I was working for the government in DC, a co-worker had an EXACT copy of this car. I have fond memories of riding in that car with him. Those rides were with several co-workers on lunch-hour short rides (off government property) to local bars or phone booths where he (and some of the others) would place bets on the numbers. That individual had "close" ties to the "mob" and he got very good pay-off odds on his bets compared to ordinary players.
A funny tale about the car is that at work, where we pulled up to park at work, the parking lot was sloped up against the building. One day he came out and found his car missing-apparently stolen. Next day the car was found about 300 feet away opposite the parking area over a slight bank in a wooded area. The car had rolled off the parking lot into the woods. It wasn't damaged. |

Well I did some deeper digging into the motor and found two stuck vavles.
Both of them were stuck closed and I got them both free so maybe I'll be Able to get this thing running yet. I'm hoping if I get it running things will free up, I have my doubts though. GT. |
