loosening lug nuts
I have a '69 Firebird convertible with original Pontiac rims. I keep finding that the rear lug nuts loosen themselves off for some reason. I checked the nuts several times after taking the car out for drives and found all 10 rear lug nuts completely loose. I have actually had one rear wheel fall right off. Any ideas why these lugnuts are coming lose and how can this be prevented?

I would say to check if you have the right size nuts

the lug studs are streching( which is how they hold together) replace them all and the nuts too , and don't use a impac on them either use a torque wrench and tell the tire monkeys to do this also or otherwise they will pay for new studs .

This may be obvious, but you do have the correct type nuts on,right? Not a set with shanks, like for a mag wheel?

if the lug nuts were the ones that are capped over the steel nut or ralley type with the color insert, there is very little contact surface against the rim if the rim holes have enlarged or rusted some. if rim holes are bad, need to change to different kind of lug nut.

Ditto to what engineer said. Rounded out holes are common on the Rally II. When reinstalling, use a torque wrench and tighten them to 50-60 ft lbs. The original lug nuts should have a black center with two grooves near the end that contacts the wheel.

Thanks for the replies. The lug nuts I have on there are the correct size. I bought them from an auto supply store. I think the idea that the holes may have enlarged sounds quite likely as they are original Ralleye II's and after 40 years they have a right to be tired.
