Super Car ditches Camshafts
Read an interesting story on the web about Swedish Super car builder Koenigsegg`s, their new twin turbo V8 will not have any camshafts, instead Pneumatically driven actuators will open and close the valves. Interesting read. Sorry I don`t know how to post , someone can google it and post the entire story .

Do you mean electrical solenoids? I do not think pneumatic is fast enough...

Of the several one finds in a search, this one seemed to have the most technical info:

Sounds very similar to the HEUI injectors used in 7.3 Power Stroke engines.

Yes for now they will only use MultiAir on the Tigershark 2.4L and the 2.0L will stay DOHC , on the new 2013 Dodge Dart, but yes the plan is to have MultiAir pretty much everywhere for Fiat and Chrysler.
The system is simple, very effective and adaptable. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XsuZIbWI0dQ to give you an idea of the potential Peter |

...and I thought "Tigershark" was a failed and long-discontinued itty-bitty boat for teenagers to annoy people with.

That's gonna be sweet; riding along and your NAIL IT, and an Exhaust Valve says "Not this time". Many happy returns to the Dealer.

Formula 1 cars have been doing this for years. Now they run 8 cylinders at around 20,000+ rpm

I wonder what "they" thought when the 1st guy decided that total loss oiling was too messy and troublesome........

No, F1 only did away with the valvesprings. They still have camshafts.

Fiat has been using their MultiAir technology for a couple years now, the North American Fiat 500 has a MultiAir motor , No intake cam , just oil pressure (Throttle/computer comtrolled), to open the intake side valves...No Throttle body either.
Very interesting technology that is adaptable to virtually any existing OHC engine block. Cheers Peter |

FWIW 2 stroke snowmobiles have all gone to electric servo valves to give variable exhaust valve timing on these "pipey" engines.
I think it is only a matter of time before we see completely electric valve controls with a map like fuel or timing on new engines. Just one more mechanical part of the internal combustion engine to go electric. Just might breath some more life in them...
