flexplate and starter for 350 turbo
guys are the starters for a 67' 230 ohc unique to the engine? working on a 67' engine mated to a 350 trans and was wondering if a 168 tooth flexplate will clear the trans case as the current 153 tooth flexplate on the engine we are having trouble locating starter to engage it. the dia. difference of the flexplates is 153 is 13" and 168 is 14" roughly. these ohc motors are new to me but seem real close to chevy 230 on bottom end, help!

ITS LH MOUNT Vs RH MOUNT...
OHC STARTERS MOUNT ON THE P/S V8 STARTERS MOUNT ON THE D/S IMAGES BORROWED FROM ROCK AUTO, WHICH HAS THE STATER.

FWIW More pics/images
1st two are showing of unit in my car,
last three are of a back up (NEW) stater out of my bin. This is simular to what Rockauto offers.

jeff that looks like what we have. guess the next question is do you have a 13" or 14" flywheel. we have a 13" flexplate and the starter won't engage it.

flexplates normally require shims between starter mount and block
remove the solenoid and manually push the bendix in to check clearance.

pics The one on the left is correct. The similar but different on the right is wrong. Notice the bubble on the area where the solenoid connects, notice the different cut of the drive opening. Compare these two where the mounting holes are in relationship to the opening at the top and bottom. Also see the extra metal between the 2 mounting holes between the top mounting holes. Mark

spoke with jerry woodland out of and he confirmed the ohc 6 uses the 166 tooth flexplate, the 14" one so now we need to find a end cone. the GM part # 1965554 is long obsolete but i will take a starter or end cone if somebody has one.

I tried the number you gave me, but it does not work. The tag on that housing is labeled hens tooth.

I gave you some bad info
I think CRS is setting in I measured a flywheel and its 14inches what I must have been thinking of was trying to use an 11inch clutch and forged flywheel and it wouldnt fit in the OHC-6 bellhousing.

Cammer-6 with everyones help i do believe the mystery has been solved as we have the correct 166 tooth flexplate on the way to be paired up with correct starter thanks to mark here having one so maybe late next week the engine will be fired off. the fact that the engine is 200 miles away makes things tougher than if i could just walk out and try different combo's but until i saw the starters in a picture i would have never figured out the difference thanks mark! i sure learned lots about these engines and really thank everyone i spoke with for their help in educating me about these engines. really glad i continued to ask and didn't make any sudden changes until i confirmed the info i was given. will do updates on the engine after we start it!
