73-77 bucket seat side panels
i've been in contact with a company that reproduces seat backs and side panels
http://northernazmopars.com/index.html about reproducing the bucket seat side panels. what they want to know is how many different styles there are (power, manual, lemans, gto, grand am,etc). my parts book only goes to 73 and i have never seen any examples in person. they would also need good examples to copy. if anyone has interest in these products, drop them a line and maybe it will happen. |

The Lower seat cover/panel is not easy to find the correct part numbers. Try group # 11.573 list two part numbers.
#1663395 for the passenger outer and drivers inner. #1663396 for the drivers inner and passenger outer. Would need someone to verify those are the correct part numbers. Power seats cover/panel are different and although these part numbers say they are for manual seats it is hard to figure out exactly what the descriptions are intended to show, unless they are interchangeable and that is why it is listed with that description. |

My Pontiac Plant 1/6/73 produced GTO with the Saddle interior didn't have them, nor did it have any evidence of ever having them. My Pontiac Plant May produced Grand Am with Neutral interior has them. Here are some more pics of '73 GTO's and LeMans Sport Coupes:
Jim Early Jr's immacualte GTO has them: This GTO has them: This GTO recently featured in HPP does not have them: The 5/73 Lakewood GA produced 3 speed GTO sold on E-bay doesn't have them:

This Golden Olive GTO with Chamois interior doesn't have them:
This black 4 speed GTO doesn't have them: This white 4 speed GTO formerly owned by a board member doesn't have them: This power seat equipped LeMans Sport Coupe has them: I would prefer to have them in my GTO. Covers up that ugly seat track. What is the consensus on why some cars have them and why some don't? Sure, some of the restored cars don't have them because of their rarity and frailty. My car is 58k mile mostly unrestored.

I am the original owner of my Black GTO and have seen the Gold GTO I own since new and my step father bought it used in 1978 and both had the trim panels since new. I think all bucket seat cars had them, they just have large slots in the 90 degree bracket molded into them that slips between the seat and track and they break very easily. I had 6 or 8 replaced under warranty !!

I bought my 73 GTO new & it had them, after about 15k the drives seat one was broken & the passanger seat was broken off shortly after. It comes from sliding out of the car & the seat is pushed down on one side & your butt catches on the trim piece & pow it's broke. After about 2 years all of them were broken from have'in fun in the front seat. I took my console out for a while when I was single & in the Navy so the seats got quite a work out from well you guys know what I'm talkin' about. Of corse I put them in the trunk but some where along the line when I cleaned out the car at some time I must have throwen them away & while they were still available I didn't get another set to replce them. Should have but didn't. But now I wish I had mine back on aas they do cove up the seat rails & make the inside look cleaner. About the trim panals that look like the Pontiac ones , well the closest ones I've seen are the ones out of the olds & buick cars. There close & would work if you can find some that aren't broken to.

Trim levels? My WAG would be that there was a trim group level and/or pkg that included or excluded the parts in question.
Example: Such as lighting groups, seat belt webbing colors and buckle difference, seat cushion design & material, from a "Custom" vs. "Deluxe" optioned interior. |

Going back to Rex's comments about not lasting too long, these pieces were very thin and prone to breaking if you caught your foot on the front corner or leaned too far left or right in the seat. The thin fork type plastic sleeves on these covers that sandwiched between the seat base and the track rail would not take much pressure. They really were just decoration to hide the mechanisms under the seats. I am always careful getting in and out of my GTO so as not to lean to hard on the edge of the seat.
Too bad we can't find out who originally made all this plastic stuff for GM. Maybe the molds are still laying around somewhere.

Interesting that gtojim73 mentioned a bracket. Checked my build sheet (broadcast codes) on item number 70 Seat Adjuster is marked M-Bracket. Any correlation?

M-bracket just means that it was a manual adjuster bracket as in no power seats. As far as an option code to show if it were to get the trim parts that cover the seat brackets, the anwser is no it came on all the cars to cover the seat adjuster brackets on all the car. The reason that a lot are missing is as stated by Billygoat73 . They were very thin where they went under the seat to attach to. It didn't take very much pressure to brake them off & then once they were broken most just threw them away because it usually broke just the front or back one off so most just pulled them off & away they went so it didn't look so bad with it just hanging there .
