Default Cheapest place for BF Goodrich Tires ?

I need to replace the BFG's I've had on my 69 Firebird for 17 years. The Discount Tire website says that for $625 I can get them at the local place installed without the extra $75 extra fees.

Is there a cheaper place to buy them plus shipping (I'll guess) and then take them to Wally to have them mounted and balanced? Or should I stay with the local DT and take my risks there too?

One site claims the 225 is too big? Not sure if they'll fit and if they don't on a stock car I don't want them.

usually summit has the best price. & if not, they will usually price match other online retailers. their shipping is free & no tax. if you have a discount tire local to you, they will most likely charge sales tax.

"junkyard??" chances of finding a set of 4 tires in your size & brand & decent condition at a junkyard are slim to none.

also, there are better tires than the bfg radial t/a... they look good & all but are outdated tread & dont perform that well. a "better" tire all around is the mickey thompson radial s/r. higher speed rating & same solid white letter looks... & they are cheaper priced.

Summit doesn't show those in a 14". I have the factory wheels on this car. It will never be raced and does not have a tire eating engine in it. Just need to replace the square tires for round ones and do a better job of storing the car this time around.

summit has that size for $124 each... $496 total! dicount tire wants $625?!? sounds like a rip off to me. wally charges like $15 each to m&b with lifetime rotation & balancing. so $555 total from summit/wally.... & no tax.

That sounds awesome! Where will I get them mounted? Tossing them into the SUV and taking them somewhere is no issue but where? Wallyworld? I don't know any local places that will do it?

Ughh! Had I read the rest of your comments I would have seen what you suggested. I will stop by Wally today and inquire about tire mounting and balancing. Last I checked they were $10.

I do appreciate the help but I had to do some more digging.

I went to Jegs and found something a bit odd. They have the same tire available for sale (BFG 205/70/14) but at two different prices. $125 or os through them and then Coker tire offers the exact same thing for $117.

When I did the Checkout its about $110 LESS than Summit. Summit charges taxes for Texas residents as I guess they have a distribution center somewhere around this giant state(?) and an extra $32 "special handling" fee. Total $560 plus.

So the only hope I have is that I place this order and it goes through sans any "extra" taxes and special fee's long after I order them.

Thoughts?

ETA: I know this is a bit of a run around but I'm hoping that it might help someone else in the future.

Yep if the facility you order from is in the state you live, taxes will be added. Tack on handling fees, oversize fees, shipping etc... and some of those cheap prices aren't exactly cut and dry.

That's why I said you really have to shop around and see what fees are added to the cost of the tire. Most instances I find the cheaper advertised prices for the tires generally make up the difference (and then some) with additional fees and charges so the tire isn't really a "deal".

There have been some instances where I found it cheaper to just order the tires from a local shop, pay state tax on it, stop by and pick them up myself when they come in, and still saved money from the shipping and oversize fees. I found Sams club to be one example of this who handle the BFG's.

We don't have a Sams membership so no go there. Also we live in soccer mommy hell for our area where there are only quick lube joints and no other shops to go to order tires. The one's that are available are not friendly to gas and time costs due to the 267,000 square miles that is the size of the great state of Texas. I've tried that game before and lost.

I'm going to try Jegs and see what happens. I have about a month for them to get it right and so far there's no hint of extra charges unless they stick it to the order somewhere after I submit the order. If they do I'll e sure to come back and warn others about it.

You live in Dallas? Isn't that one of the bigger cities in Texas? Wow, puzzles me you don't have decent tire stores there. Lol soccer mommy hell.

It'll just come down to who has the best shipping prices for you. Oddly when I shop for them the prices are different from month to month. It's never the same place that has the best price.

There are 41 locations in Dallas that according to BFG sells their tires in Dallas alone:

This includes Walmart, Sears, Discount Tire, Midas, Pep Boys, Tire King as well as several new car dealerships.

based on your 1st post i figured you meant walmart when you said "take them to wally." last time i checked my local wally world was $13 each. & they do a good job with modern balancing machines.

ive found summit is usually the best price for most any auto parts... & if not they will price match most parts. & if you ever need it, their customer service is great.

What about wheel weights? Really don't want the stick on ones that were being used and I know that the old style lead weights are ultra hard to find.

I supposed I will take the ones off of the wheels that are on there now. That is if they are still there.

Where else would I find repopped or original wheel weights?

last time i checked they still have the hammer on weights, they are a coated lead to limit corrosion with aluminum wheels. what i usually do is ask for only "static balancing" thats where they only do the backside of the rim so you dont have ugly weights on the front that can also get in the way of trim rings. & actually the stick on weights are very good & usually dont come off if applied to a clean wheel. most places use them nowadays. the bfg's i just had done at my local sears they used both, i said only static balance but their newer machine required boyth the tack on lead weights plus the stick on inner weights, which resulted in a better balance since the stick ons were located more towards the front edge of the rim. you should be fine with either or both.

The long term plan is to bring the car back to factory condition at some point which includes refinishing the wheels. Already have a set of trim rings that are good and the wheels look great with them on to hide the pint chips. I'll pull a wheel and see what back there and make sure to keep them when they change the tires or take them off before I go.

Would still like to find a place that sells them. I have the stick ons from my bike in sheets of different weights.

I changed over to 15" rims on my car for better tire selection.

If you concerned about a 225/14 fitting you could always start with just two and see if they work on the front if they don't move them to the back and get the 215/14 for the front.
