They were massaged by well known Pontiac racer/builder Bob Maxey from Clinton, MD back in the day.

1977 1/2 or 1978 Phoenix project car with Ram Air IV crate engine
One of the magazines, circa 1978 had a Ram Air IV crate engine in a rwd Phoenix; it was either Car Craft or Hot Rod IIRC.
Have so far been unable to locate a copy and am relying upon 40 year old or so memory.

Curious how you stumbled on to them? Wonder what they would show on a flow bench.

a friend of mine had them sitting in his garage for the last couple years,...i've known about them ,just never looked at them closely, he didn't want to sell until recently...he told me he got them from Calvin Hill..he says they flow 286 ,but @ what lift???..Mike Voycey got a hold of me and said the S.P. stood for Super Pro,he wasn't sure exactly what the heads were, but said Bob used Brandywine cyl heads for the porting .then assembled them himself....pretty cool racing history..my friend had no idea they use to belong to Bob Maxey.. so ,i'm thinking they could have been on Bob's Astre, they were obviously ported in 1978 and from what i can find i believe Bob had the Astre then..????i don't know if anybody will know exactly...if they were on his car??does anybody know did he do cyl heads for other people back then?

All the RAIV heads go into turbulence/tumble at some point past .600 lift. But when you bolt a intake on the head it goes away as per Dan Whittmore.

Bob helped a lot of local Racers in the Maryland area. He did do some Chevy stuff but his Expertise was Pontiacs. He ran 8.80's In his Grand Am in the Late 80's. I do know that motor was 458 cubic inch with SD Ported Heads. His car weight was right around 2600lbs. Pretty Impressive stuff back then. His attention to detail was over the top. I still miss our telephone conversations today. Great Guy.

curious .what is the max flow you can get out of a cast iron 722 cyl head...286 back in 1978 was pretty strong i'd say....

Butler brazed up a set of RAIVs and made "wide port" versions out of them for class racing. Got 800HP out of a 400 I believe. Wilcox has got 300 cfm out a some of the "X" d ports. But I am sure they had epoxy too. Then you have the Robertson 320cfm raised port 48s with a bunch of epoxy in the roof. Awesome heads in their own right. I think a new cast steel RAIV head would sell. Make it with extra materiel in key spots for porting. Cast steel (not freaking iron) so it is easily welded for repairs or to make a set of wide ports out of them. LS chamber while you are at it too. Iron heads make more power than their aluminum counterparts because they hold the heat and heat is energy. And its not like you are taking 100lbs off the front of your car going aluminum like a BBC either. |
