Tom, thanks for the info.

I spoke with Herb at LPI and we discussed a few things, unfortunately the cap fix will take longer than i have at the moment. I am going to button it up and run it the way it is until this winter. I will then do the cap fix and install an oil pump from LPI this winter when i have the motor out again. I will most likely do a pan & oil cooler at the same time.

So i guess i will try putting the front seal in backwards and see how it works. I am not sure if i will get a very good idea with no load though. Changing the seal once the boat is back together is not easy (have to pull the v-drive to remove the driveshaft, etc.).
