Hey guys, I have been folowing this overheat thing from the beginning and it seems like one thing in common is a motor rebild, could it be deck hight. Every ono trying to drop compression and end up with pistons to far in the hole. I heard that it affects heating.

If you don't degree your cam can it contribute to some of these overheating problems. Being an amature engine rebuilder and not owning a degree wheel, I just lined up the timing marks. I have tried everything on this forum, but I still will go up to 240 sitting in traffic, but drop down to 180 moving. Please someone let me know if this was a bad move!

I have had the same overheating problem for months. I am the guy from San Diego that runs Distilled water and Water Wetter.
Tonight I am going to scope my car and test to see if it is a lean condition. All I know abot my motor is that is was rebuilt, not sure if it was bored or not. Rather then speculate I will put the car on the computerized Sun Scope and get back with the details. |

68convbird, IMO, degreeing a cam is something you do if you are chasing the last few HP, and it is only done to double check the cam grinder as they have been known to screw up a cam occasionally. I don't think it could cause the gross overheating at idle you are seeing without seriously affecting the car's performance across the board.

I was talking to a guy at work yesterday and he said his girlfriend owns a 89 Camaro and it runs hot. He says it will get up to 220. Do you know if the water pumps in those models are the same design? Any help is appreciated.

Chevies do not use the same type of pump arrangement as Pontiacs.

So it doesn't have a separate plate, which means no modification is possible? I have a 72 Monte, and I've probably changed the pump before. It's all one piece isn't it?

That's the way I remember it; no mods necessary or possible. I wonder if care must be taken by the rebuilder to press the impeller into the proper position tho... It's been a while since I opened up a Chevy....

I couldn't find any pictures of the pump, so I'll make a new post on the Camaro forum. Thanks for responding.

Wow, this thread has come alive. I guess summer must be approaching.
The cast impeller thing seems to be a crap shoot; you just may need to go to your supplier & check his stock for a cast one. From last year's postings, there did not seem to be one mfr or model that was consistently a cast impeller. George

I got my water pump from NAPA and it was a cast pump. But that still did not resolve my problem. I believe that the motor was bored and the current system, although in very good shap in not capable of cooling. It is going to take an new aluminum radiator!

I thought I heard of making the waterpump bypass smaller(making more water pass thru the rad)helps cooling.Only saw 1 person in this thread mention this. What does everyone think?
