Wife's aero coupe project
We've had this car for at least five years. I'm now getting ready to begin tearing it down for a rebuilding. We've got another one that we are using as a daily driver.

Lets see the daily one too!
I wouldn't mind having one of those some day - when I have more space, time & money.

The aero coupe that I'm getting ready to work on, I bought in Conn. about five years ago. Must of been quite a site with the current paint job. Here's our daily driver. I put full length floor pans in this one last year. She's going to break 150,000 any day now, still runs good.

Had one about 1993. Trunk sucked. The little air dam under the nose would break easily. But was solid as a rock...drove perfectly for me for upwards of 130000 miles.
Oh ya...... sucked in the snow. |

Look great guys - If I found one for a decent price in nice #2 condition - I'd pick it up.

When I have to open the trunk, the trunk opening definately becomes a topic of conversation. At least I can fit a grocery bag in there. Fortunately we don't get to much snow down here because she does "suck" in the snow.

i have one. its been in the family since 1992. got it from the original owner. used to be my Moms daily driver. its been parked for a while now. thinking of selling it, but not sure yet. very rare to see one here in Cali. was sold new here from the local "chevy" dealer. i remember they had two of them parked nose to nose on the front line. wish i had a photo of that today....
its covered up under the silver tarp,i'll scan some other pix i have later..... Good Luck on your project!!!! |

here it is before it was parked. i had to scan these from 35 mm prints. as you can see, the car has been droped via spindles and rear springs. this really makes the car look WAY BETTER IMHO !!!!.... add on a set of the NASCAR style wheels and you got a real racy looking machine....
also the car got backed into in the grocery story parking lot several years ago. the first pics show it right after the door was fixed at our body shop and that explains the gray primer on the door. btw, still got the rally II's put away...... the reason it was sold new by a chevy dealer was they got them (two) form a GM auction as leftovers or unsold cars. no idea where the other one is...... |

I bought one new in 87 the same way. It was being sold new with the full factory warranty and not by a Pontiac dealership. The car had like 1,200 miles on it and never registered. Also had a small factory promo sticker on the windshield if I remember correctly. There was an earlier aero-coupe thread that had posted info about these "promo" cars from those that had worked at the dealerships.

Making some progress on the Aero Coupe. Fenders are solid, but the doors are questionable. Floors are actually better than what I expected, but will still need patches. I had to put full length 1/2 pans in my driver last winter. Check out the wild paint job on the rim in the trunk.

Couldn't tell from the pics in post #1, but now I see whomever put that awful paint job on it was trying to replicate a Richard Petty racer. Yuck. (not to RP)
The wheel paint scheme was creative but still ugly. If they wanted it to be a Petty mobile, they should have painted the wheels white. (ugly again) Glad you are keeping it alive and getting it's career back on track. |

I just finished fitting a 71 pontiac block with D-port heads and 350 tranny in the Aero-Coupe. I welded the rubber motor mounts solid and bolted them to the mounts on the motor. Once I was satisfied with the positioning of the motor/tranny, I spot welded the mounts to the crossmember. Pulled the motor/tranny and drilled holes in the cross member to bolt the mounts to the frame. Next is floor repair.

Starting on some of the metal repair. I shaped some flat sheet metal to look close to the original floorpan. The driver door jamb was trashed. I fabricated a repair panel for that too. I used a thicker gauge for the door striker area. This seems to be a problem area on this vintage of GP's. You can see where the original broke apart.[previous owners tried to fix it with rivets] The factory only put a few spot welds on the striker support. I welded the entire area of the support. We'll see if this makes an improvement. I'll probably repair my driver this way , now that I've seen how GM attached it. That one has been touched up already once.
