X2.

I think what we are seeing here is, ALL the manufacturers can tailor a drive-train to make the EPA regulations happy. Real world? Not very likely.

while that's somewhat true, my GM 6.2 gets as good or better mileage than any of my 5.3's did.

Why is that?

And how much is that?

i attribute it to way more low end torque? the engine is just never working hard.

it commonly gets 21-23 mpg (imperial)

Same gearing? 2wd? 4wd? Comparing apples to apples? So your 6.2 gets approx 17.5mpg regularly? Freeway or around town?

i had a 2004 reg cab short box 5.3 4x4. it would get a best of 20 mpg. (highway)

then a 2009 5.3 crew cab 4x4 with 3:42's and it would usually be in that 19-21 range.

traded that on a 2011 6.2 CC 4x4 with the max trailering package (3:73's) and in comparable conditions to the others it most often pulls 21-23. it takes some kind of conditions like heavy winds or rain to take it under 20. and power that makes the 5.3 feel like an anemic turd.

i would reset the fuel indicator in summer and the wife would drive it for a month (50-50 city\highway) and it would usually average in that 16-17 mpg american.

of course that's with her driving it. as like most engines with lots of power it takes fuel to make that power. if you often put the pedal to the floor that average goes down quickly.

Big numbers compared to the 4.8 2003 2 wheel GMC I had.

Wait until the RAM 1500 with the 3.0 v6 turbo diesel comes out early next year (it is available in the Grand Cherokee later this year).

The 1500 is expected to get 28 mpg for 4wd and 30 for 2wd and tow 12000 lbs. that will hurt some feelings.

+ the additional purchase price, maintenance and more expensive fuel.

4500 extra sticker for the Diesel. Don't agree on maintenance being more. The mileage will more than make up for it if you drive much and tow or haul....we are talking pick up trucks.

One of my family members bought a 3500 Duramaxx; I admit I like the truck, but for the type of hauling I'd use a diesel for I question GM's foundation; we've tore up too many Chebby frames.

Overhead cam engines usually tend to have more "clatter" to them.

That just shows how little this guy knows about diesels; that's why I threw him on ignore.

If you're hauling big loads the diesel will outperform, outpull and outlive a gasser anyday.

Plus, gassers guzzle gas when they're loaded heavy, diesels dont give a damn.

I'll take the 800 + ft pds of torque when pullin 10,000 + lbs anyday especially on a grade.

for people that put on a lot of miles towing it may pay back.

how many times did you have to change the frames in those trucks? chebby has weak frames that are easy to tear up....

455gv, gm 1/2 tons have had boxed frames for several years now--possibly a response to charges of weakness--but should be quite a bit harder to hurt them now.

It is my understanding that the company that manufactures the diesel is half owned by Fiat and GM. I wouldn't be surprised to see that same engine sitting in a GM.
