64 Data Plate
The date plate (aka trim tag, cowl tag) on a 64 Freemont built GTO I am restoring appears to have been unpainted by the factory. The aluminum appears as new under the rivet head area while the exposed portion has a hazy light tan oxidized appearance. A search of prior posts seems to indicate tags for 65 GTO's were painted black at all factories except Freemont, which were covered by a mask and left unpainted. Is the same true for the 1964 Freemont built GTO's?

My '65 Freemont GTO data tag is black. Of course I have no way of knowing when it got that way.

To my knowledge, '64 Data Plates were not painted on Fremont built cars.

Fremont cowl tags were not painted.

Thanks for the response Keith. Were the tags put on after the firewall was painted or since mine appears to have 3/16" or so of black paint horizontally across the bottom and a small amount at the top above the raised portion would I be correct in assuming they had been masked off after installation?

It was masked off. Fremont did not have them painted black in 1964 or 1965.
This is the Fremont assembly line in 1964.

Thanks to all who responded. The knowledge and resources of those who participate in this forum make me hope that someday there will be a compilation of data discussing what is factory correct (including assembly location variations) similar to the NCRS Technical Information Manual and Judging Guides available to Corvette restorers. (I'm making that comment in anticipation of some judge in the future pointing out that I have an incorrectly finished cowl tag!)

In my opinion that would be virtually impossible.
These things vary by model year, by final assembly location, by shift and even by individual operator. PMD had several plants producing cars during most of that time, generating a ton of product...and a ton of variation. Corvette had one plant (and often one shift) for the bulk of it's vintage production. Much easier to get your arms around that scenario. K
