More sad news.
I have his signed book as well. We were also friends on a gun forum. I got to meet and talk with him and his wife at VMP, and unlike some "big names" present, I felt he was very approachable. He even signed one of my die cast GeeTo Tiger cars. A bit later that day I asked Jim Wangers to do the same. He was reluctant when he saw Milt's signature, and he let me know it. I also had Dave sign it. The same weekend I got to spend good time in conversation alone with Arnie Beswick while we leaned on the fence beside the starting line tower, so that was a great time for me. RIP Mr. Schornack. |

Milt took an interest in what Mike and I were doing with the Grocery Getter and Boss Bird, and even rode up to the line in the tow truck a few times. I took that as a HUGE compliment from such a big icon in our sport.
Our team will always cherish the chance we had to spend time with him. Eric

I had heard over the past few days that Milt was in failing health but didn't feel it was appropriate to post here at that time. Very sorry to hear of his passing. RIP Milt. He was a good friend because Eric and I had to more or less win his approval over a few year period. When he first saw the Grocery Getter at Norwalk, he was a little skeptical of the car, our team of "young unknown" Pontiac racers. After spending some time with him and being able to share our experience building and racing the Grocery Getter, he warmed up to our project. I loved his book and I feel he was always a mechanic, tuner and innovator first. All the accolades, fame and notoriety followed later. He WAS the BOBCAT in the Royal Pontiac Bobcat kits. He personally installed untold number of them himself. The Pontiac world has lost another huge ICON of the muscle car era. RIP Milt Schornack, my friend and mentor.

I first met Milt at the 1988 Wichita POCI Convention drag races. He had the red '64 GTO that we all know about from the Car & Driver article. He was running high 12's and said it wasn't pulling on top end. I had a few Tri-Power parts with me, so I suggested we put larger .073" jets in the end carbs. We did that and he ran, I believe, a 12.17. I sure wish we had smart phones in those days so I would have pictures and videos of that event.
I remember he was a very good guy to work with and talk with. A big art of our Pontiac hobby has gone wit his passing. RIP, Milt, we'll miss you!

RIP, I bought his book when it first came out and got him to sign it at the SVGTO show in Pa one year. He was a really nice, approachable guy who I saw a couple times after in Pa. Once at the GTOAA in Valley Forge and then at the POCI in Gettysburg. His picture swapping that engine on that 60s car mag cover(Hot Rod?)is iconic. He will be missed

1990 ENGLISHTOWN NEW JERSEY...
...Was my first meeting. I had been reading many of the old car mags from back in the day and knew he had Tuned, Drove, and Tested a Cammer or two so I sort of knew who he was.
He was more than willing to shoot the sh!t and even offered to check his files to see if he had any of the tech stuff from those days to share. Sadly he was never able to locate anything but every time we met again at any event he was again always willing and ready to talk. The man had amazing tuning skills and brought a lot to the Pontiac Following. He will be missed.

Milt was a great guy, and I was fortunate to meet him a few times and chat. It turned out that one of my local friends- Mike Carroll was also a mechanic at Royal at the same time as Milt, and they butted heads for whatever reason. In the early 2000's Mike as a member of our local Pontiac club, and had just finished restoring a static display Vietnam era Huey helicopter as a tribute to the one he was a crew chief on. I had given them both the contact information for the other, and I know they spoke at least once.

So sad to hear about Milt. It was nice bumping into him occasionally and talking Pontiacs. As others have said he was always happy to talk. I was always liked to hear about his latest Pontiac adventure.
