There was a 1964 Ford Galaxie called the Tobacco King that sold at Mecum back in 2008 that had one of those Turbonique axles. There's a couple short videos of it on YouTube that explains how it worked.

One of my favorite 60's cars. Been obsessing over it for years. This car is/was sweet. |

There were a few other cars back in the day that got Turbonique rear axles, one was a 1965 Z16 Chevelle. There have been a few discussions about them (including other products, like rocket powered go karts) over on the HAMB board - you could do a search over there on 'turbonique' to turn up more information.

I have one of their catalogues with descriptions of their products, pictures of various vehicles/applications and the cars mentioned.

One of my "Co-Workers" at Holley Carburetor owned a complete unit.
The reason why he sold it was the lack of propellant charges to use in the thing. Tom V.

The catalog is a fascinating and scary read. Lots of technical data and illustrations. The testimonials from customers is also interesting. The scary part is the danger of using the products/fuels.
So the owner of the company lived "down the lane" from my dads place. He had built a custom home on a lake outside of St. Cloud Florida and had a canal built from the lake to underneath his home. The business was located in old industrial section of Orlando Florida. The house was shuttered for years. Rumor has it he was in jail due to patent violations. I would love to find one of these vehicles and/or the power systems. I did see one of the custom karts at Mecum auction this year near the Tommy Ivo display. Here are a few pics from the catalog. |

Bringing up an old thread...I found this black and white w/no sound promotional video from Turbonique. There are some crazy turbine powered go karts, I saw one GTO and also what appears to be Tommy Ivo's four engine dragster. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WiVRv1ZPtWw

Didn't Ivo's dragster use 4 Buicks?
That open-prop machine is scary...

Yes, all of Tommy’s early dragsters from single, dual to quad engined were Buick nailhead powered.
