A close friend of mine flew the 1000mi to FL and brought back a really sketchy mid 70s cutlass that was not keen on re-starting. He stayed at a cheap motel one night, and gave the desk clerk $$ to watch it all night. With it sitting there idling for 7 hours. Came out the next morning, jumped in it, and did the last 400 miles thankfully trouble free.
Enjoy your adventure, and plan accordingly.

Two quick disconnects on the battery. Pull it at night. Might take you a few minutes to pull it and put it back in but it sure will make it tough to steal.

those air tags or another gps trackers are cool.
What I have done, is pull the coil wire so that it's there, but not connected to the cap (only the rubber boot end lightly holds it in place; and a 'club'. Nothing will stop a thief if they are set on taking your car, all you can do is have deterrents. (I would also suggest parking near the front door to the motel, as opposed to in the far corner where miscreants can fiddle without being noticed.) Enjoy the trip!!

I use to have the battery disconnect in back of the car when I had the battery in the trunk and racing it. I would use that but the down side is you loose all your preset radio stations along with the clock.
I am looking at a keyless entry system that cuts out the ignition when it's locked. |

I have had this on my Firebird since the early '80s. |

If I remember correctly. Had a relocated the battery to trunk location, Had 2 master switches, one outside next to plate with detachable lever. To be race track compliant. Then another in the truck. And a hidden switch for the ignition. Had a good alarm I installed with remote, motion sensor and sound sensor, touch sensor. Even had a friend who tried to get it running when it was stored for the winter one year in his garage. Failed at it. And he was another auto tech.

I'd park it with at least one side of the car against a curb turn wheels all the way into the curb., install a car alarm, battery disconnect, and club. Then put a car cover on it. That should just about cover it. Lol

Not a road trip, but the couple time I have left my car outside, (driveway at home) I pull the coil wire off, bring in the house.

Nothing will stop someone who has enough time or a truck. 2 things that I have found that have actually stopped the theft of a car are :1) Fuel shut off especially for carbureted cars. The car will start and drive a short distance and stop.

Sorry fat finger. The second: if you have a distributor and separate coil, swap the position of the number 1 spark plug wire and the coil wire in the cap. The car will fire once every revolution but not start. These have both worked.
