2bbl air cleaner questions
A couple of questions,
What size is the lid, and are there any chrome covers that will fit a 2bbl ? Also, does anyone sell a repro of the whole air cleaner? |

What car and what year?
There are numerous types of 2-barrel air cleaners. Honestly there’s little to no chance that anyone is reproducing any 2-barrel air cleaners other than the little chrome Tri-Power units as there’s really no market to justify reproducing them.

My experience is that the chrome that is on any aftermarket air cleaner is pure crap and even with waxing will pit up within 3 years even with just humidity, especially anything Moroso offers that is chrome.
The best way to go is to send your lid out to get chromed .

from my observations (lets say to be conservative for 1970+) all Pontiac air cleaners used the same sized lid.
The only exception was the TA, and they used (for arguments sake) a standard 4bbl base, with a smaller OD lid to fit under the shaker. That is to say, that if you had a new 1971 T37, and you wanted to go to the parts counter to get chrome air cleaner lid and valve covers, you would order the same part as the guy behind you who had a new 1971 GTO.

I will say my 2bbl lid doesn't quite cover the 4bbl dual snorkle i have on the Lemans. the dual snorkle is 16 5/8

interesting, since I mostly deal in Firebird stuff, I must be missing some details.
I had understood that 1973+ the A-body and F-bodies shared the same design air cleaners - albeit F-bodies used a dropped base; I had understood that the 68-70 GTO's & GP's used the same basic air cleaner as the Firebird's; I have observed that 2bbl & 4bbl Firebirds used the same diameter air cleaners... I have actually pulled good shaped lids from Pontiac's to stash with my few Firebird air cleaners.

The only reason i kept the 2bbl lid was because it is a smaller diameter lid and it opens up the air flow. " i think" kinda like flipping one over.

2bbl air cleaner
Were you looking for a complete 2bbl aircleaner ?? Here’s a spare
Yes 2bbl lids are about 1/2 “ smaller |

My 71 lemans 2bbl had a specific air cleaner housing, different from 4bbl ones. Filter was narrower and taller than the AC212(?) 4bbl one.
As far as chrome goes, this is all I know. In June of 1988 I was stomping through a junk yard, somewhere in south Dennis NJ, and popped a hood on a bone stock lemans….five dollars later I had a chrome air cleaner lid for mine. * shrug *

That's the one I have. So a repro GTO chrome lid will be too big?

Yessir. I was shocked when I saw it. It was identical to the black 2bbl version on my lemans, except being full on chrome don’t get ya home. I think I may have run across a couple more over the years, and by couple I mean 2, maybe 3.
I’m guessing they all could have been chromed after the fact…but who would do that?

A thought! Am trying to remember if the '68 & 69 400 2bbl GTO's had a chrome 2bbl lid & valve covers. Either that was the source, or someone had a 2bbl lid chromed for $25-40. In the mid 70's - mid 80's, local chrome plating was not that expensive. We had 4 shops locally that would plate parts. In '83, had a '80 Z-28 aircleaner lid, a new 301 valley cover, & a pair of Turbo 301 valve covers, all chrome plated locally for $100.

I agree, it was something so rare I didn’t even think about it.
The lo-po GTO sounds like a viable source from which they may have originated. As I indicated earlier, the chrome lid I scored was identical to my black one in every way.

I'd sure like to find that one haha 😎
Are there any aftermarket chrome lids that can fit on my factory air cleaner? |
