If you need another slant pan hydrostick out of a running car that was used for racing let me know, everything worked ok, just leaked. Not mine but a buddy of mine.

Motor mounts
Charlie here == I have wanted to install a 59 block in my 58 but have had no luck in finding the right motor mount == with out removing the fenders and front end it is near inpossable to locate where the motor mounts should be installed == as you know the 59 was the first year for the side mounts and the 58 as well as your 57 had front and rear mounts == no side motor mounts == is there a way to install the 59 engine using the existing motor mounts == Y/N == any ideas would be helpful == where did you find the dual quad intake for the 59 block == I have a tripower for the 59 but it won't run right == about to give it up ? ==

59 & 60 timing covers are cast iron and both have the "ears" to use the front 58 mounting setup. Wouldn't think you should have a problem.

Very Nice Job
Well done! Beautiful job and craftsmanship on that build. One of the nicest 57’s I have ever seen. What transmission and rearend did you put behind that engine?

Love that car.
I bought the 370 motor that was on here a while back I put the motor back together and ran it on my test stand It's been bored and stroked to 428 ci. Has the 3 rib M/T rods And venolia pistons, I think I'm going to put this in my 57-wagon with the M/T cross-ram intake and have a little fun with it. I've just got to get some time to do it, Maybe this summer (hopefully) It's got a lot of compression so I was thinking E-85. Do they make E-85 kits for the eddy carbs? I'll let all know and post some pics when aval. Sorry for stealing your post too. Thanks GT. |

For my 55 I used the 59 front timing cover also, for the mount and chassis, the drivers side stock exhaust needed adjusted. Then the trans linkage needed modified.

We have noticed you purchased the old 370 engine == we have one in my old 58 and have been thinking about moving to the newer 59 or 60 engine for easy swap == I have been told in the past about all I could do with this is bore it out with not much gain in HP == just how much can we expect if we rebuild the motor with the right parts == we have the 60 tripower in there now but still won't move the way I want it to == is there an after market 4 barrel carb that would do more == thanks for any info == charlie here

Charlie 58- I'm real happy with the Tri-Power '58 engine I built for my '59 GMC (3,800 lb.). It's bored to 382 c.i., but I had to "get serious" to squeeze more power out of it than the early engines I'd run in the past. I haven't dyno'd it, but I believe it's in the neighborhood of the 365 HP I was aiming for, with Dyno2000 simulator (using actual flow data of my heads). It uses the original '58 heads with some porting, mostly seat/bowl area. But the main improvement is combustion chamber shape. I milled away the "bathtub" shape, leaving a fairly small quench area. The pistons have a 'D' shaped relief, with the flat side of the 'D' right where the edge of the head's quench surface is. I inset steel divider plates to unsiamese the center two exhaust ports, so the longbranch headers can function as designed. Exhaust is 2.5" stainless with reproduction VOE mufflers. It's almost over-cammed with a hydraulic roller of .540" lift, 236/242 degrees @ .050", but it's very responsive. Ignition is very precise- Hall-effect crank trigger driving a Crane timing control unit.

Is that a 60 timing cover? How does that work out with the holes in the block since it was a reverse cooled system?

The heads and the oil pan were off of it when I got it. I put a victor intake on it and run it on my test stand. It sounds pretty impressive on the test stand. I didn't calculate the compression before I put it together which I wish I would of done so now i'm going to pull the heads and freshen them up and calculate the compression. I'm sure it's 12-13-1 around there. GT. |

Just a quick update. The motor and trans are in the car. Had to make front and rear cross members in order to raise the motor for header clearance. Should have the headers finished next week.

Did the raised engine require floorpan surgery?

Hi Jack,
No surgery required. I'm using a slant pan hydro so I have room. If I had tried to use a flat pan I would have had to do major modifications. |

If you had used a 55-58 front mount(bottom of timing cover) and a midplate (or reinforced your bell mounts), you wouldn't have had the side clearance issue.
Neat car regardless. |

Nice work on the engine side mounts.
I just looked back at your dyno numbers. I'd be concerned about a HydroMotive unblown-competition box handling that much torque- unless you plan on being tire-limited. I'm still running the same HydroMotive box I got back in '66 but never with a 462 c.i. engine. You haven't answered about what brand the mini-starter is?
