mylar chrome- stealth switch
Looking for something to make a plain black rocker switch match the chrome nobs on my dash (68 firebird). I am putting in electric exhaust cut outs and I am using the cigarette lighter body to hold the switch for the E-cut outs. Got the idea from another member and I think that would be really slick. Got the switch mounted in the hollowed- out lighter body, but it sticks out like a sore thumb on the dash. My cigarette lighter didnt work anyway. I have 2 choices. Either somehow fasten the chrome head of the cig. lighter to the rocker switch, or.... cover the black rocker switch in a similar chrome mylar to match the look of the stock nobs (for the wiper, lights, etc). I dont know how I could mount the head of the cig. light to the rocker reliably.. Would crazy glue work and hold up?? Or, can I buy some chrome look lylar sheeting?

Would it be possible to use something like a headlight switch instead of a toggle? That way, it would match and function just like the light knob.

great idea about the headlight switch to activate the E cut outs. I just dont know how I would wire it. The toggle switch is a momentary switch that lets you open the cut outs a little or all the way, then close them a little or all the way.
How could I get a headlight switch or something similar to do that? |

Head over to a well stocked hobby shop. Ask for "Bare Metal Foil" . The stuff is great and will polish out like chrome. Self sticking super thin metal foil that conforms to pretty much any shape. You will find yourself using it for alot of things.

How would that work on the 4 circular gauge pods for the 66-67 Lemans/GTO?

You can cut it into any shape needed. Once it is burnished down it can polish out like chrome. It can then be clearcoated if you like. It is so thin that it will show your fingerprint if squeezed between two fingers.

Thanks for the tips.
I ended up finding a DPDT (double pole/ double throw) center Off momentary toggle switch at radio shack. I will mount the cig lighter knob only to that toggle (which will poke out throught the dash, and the lighter decorative bezel will cover it all up). Mock ups look great. Should be able to control the E cut outs well and look like a factory knob. Just hope I wire it correctly. I will post some pics if anyone is interested. May take a while as my time is real limited this next week or so. |
