Cheapest place for BF Goodrich Tires ?
I need to replace the BFG's I've had on my 69 Firebird for 17 years. The Discount Tire website says that for $625 I can get them at the local place installed without the extra $75 extra fees.
Is there a cheaper place to buy them plus shipping (I'll guess) and then take them to Wally to have them mounted and balanced? Or should I stay with the local DT and take my risks there too?

usually summit has the best price. & if not, they will usually price match other online retailers. their shipping is free & no tax. if you have a discount tire local to you, they will most likely charge sales tax.
"junkyard??" chances of finding a set of 4 tires in your size & brand & decent condition at a junkyard are slim to none. Last edited by 78w72; 02-06-2017 at 12:50 PM. |

also, there are better tires than the bfg radial t/a... they look good & all but are outdated tread & dont perform that well. a "better" tire all around is the mickey thompson radial s/r. higher speed rating & same solid white letter looks... & they are cheaper priced.

Its for a bone stock 69 OHC Sprint Vert FB and it has 205/70/14 right now. It handles awesome with thse tires so I want the same or better, I've looked at bigger sizes in 215 and 225 but they get taller as they go up.
One site claims the 225 is too big? Not sure if they'll fit and if they don't on a stock car I don't want them.

summit has that size for $124 each... $496 total! dicount tire wants $625?!? sounds like a rip off to me. wally charges like $15 each to m&b with lifetime rotation & balancing. so $555 total from summit/wally.... & no tax.

Ughh! Had I read the rest of your comments I would have seen what you suggested. I will stop by Wally today and inquire about tire mounting and balancing. Last I checked they were $10.

based on your 1st post i figured you meant walmart when you said "take them to wally." last time i checked my local wally world was $13 each. & they do a good job with modern balancing machines.
ive found summit is usually the best price for most any auto parts... & if not they will price match most parts. & if you ever need it, their customer service is great. |

I supposed I will take the ones off of the wheels that are on there now. That is if they are still there. Where else would I find repopped or original wheel weights?

last time i checked they still have the hammer on weights, they are a coated lead to limit corrosion with aluminum wheels. what i usually do is ask for only "static balancing" thats where they only do the backside of the rim so you dont have ugly weights on the front that can also get in the way of trim rings. & actually the stick on weights are very good & usually dont come off if applied to a clean wheel. most places use them nowadays. the bfg's i just had done at my local sears they used both, i said only static balance but their newer machine required boyth the tack on lead weights plus the stick on inner weights, which resulted in a better balance since the stick ons were located more towards the front edge of the rim. you should be fine with either or both.

Would still like to find a place that sells them. I have the stick ons from my bike in sheets of different weights.

I changed over to 15" rims on my car for better tire selection.
If you concerned about a 225/14 fitting you could always start with just two and see if they work on the front if they don't move them to the back and get the 215/14 for the front. |

If a correct factory tire isn't needed then I most often times end up at Tire Rack to order tires. It's usually the shipping that makes the difference as to where I'll buy. Some tires advertise cheaper but make up for it with ridiculous shipping charges.
The BFG's still seem to be the most common and popular tire I have to buy for customer work as they still make a lot of the 14 and 15" sizes I need and it's what they generally prefer on these cruiser classic cars. I invested in my own changer/balancer just because of the line of work I do and too many of my own cars in the stable, it just made sense. But best prices for mounting/balancing around town would vary back when I was hauling tires all over the place. I would think Walmart would be as cheap as anybody. I'd use what is convenient for you. Sometimes places are a little funny about doing it if you didn't buy the tires from them, so it may take a couple of stops. On the wheel weights, the knock on stuff is mainly what I use since I deal with factory steel wheels 90% of the time. I buy them in bulk off the internet. They are available all over the internet, just doing a search should turn up several suppliers. If that is what you prefer to use you may have to bring a few boxes along because I know most shops around town here pretty much use the stick on stuff anymore. |

If you can wait a while, i have a set of 225/70/14 on my 65 GTO that i will sell. I want to get the new Firestone radials coming out soon. I will then sell my tires. They have about 1500 miles on them at the most. Shipping from the East, not sure if that will be a problem. I don't see why they won't fit nicely. My wheels are 6" deep and they do not look to big for the wheel. If interested PM me.
