Cam help
Hello all I’m new to the forum I’m building a 10-1 406 with butler prepared Edelbrock unported d port heads with a 72cc chamber short block will have forged rods and dss forged pistons edelbrock dual plain intake going in a 65 gto stick car I’m having a difficult time deciding on a cam shaft definitely going roller had originally been thinking about the xr276hr till I’ve seen posts on here about them being a pooch. Butler recommended their similar custom grind with a 112 Ls angle I’m looking for something that’s lopy at idle I’m just wondering if anyone has used this cam in a 400 and if it has a tame idle or no or can someone recommend me another grind that will fit my preference thanks.

If your planing on putting just the base line performer intake on those better flowing D port heads then you’ll be leaving some 25 hp on the table.
Knowing weather or not your running headers will need to be known to make a intelligent cam pick for your 400.

Been down this road with the Butler prepped E-Heads. Difference in cost between letting them inspect and assemble ‘unported’ heads with better valves and dual springs vs the cost of what they call their ‘290 cfm’ D-ports just isn’t worth saving. If you are paying them to inspect and assemble the heads with good stainless valves and dual springs for your cam selection, then toss the comparatively small amt of extra $$ and just get their ‘290’ heads. The exhaust port on the box-stock Eddy D-port is surprisingly stingy at 160. After porting to their ‘290’ level, my Butler prepped Eddy D-ports flowed 300/210.
Agree 1,000% on the suggestion to stay away from the std ‘Performer’ intake. Been there, done that. Far better potential and performance with a well-prepped stock intake. Or go RPM and drop the comparatively small amt on a drop base kit for your shaker or air cleaner base. Virtually all negative reports on the Comp 276 roller cam are in regard to its use in 455s and 460+ stroker builds. Seat timing is pretty stingy for the .050 numbers. Buts it’s like likely much better suited to a 406. Butler’s 230/236 grind on a 112* LSA would be great in your E-headed 406 where the same cam on a 110* LSA would be on the small and tight side of things for a larger displacement build. Very eager to hear how this build turns out! |

LOPY IDLE....406ci..... 10:1 comp .... Edelbrock D port
may I suggest Howards Hyd Roller #418005-09 its there smallest Rattler cam. and I would use 1.65 rocker arms, if your springs can handle .583" of valve lift. |

How much more power with stock E D ports on a 400 vs big valve iron? All other things equal?

With stock iron heads running a .550” lift hydro roller you could make 420 Hp with a well thought out street 400 cid motor, take that same 400 short block and bolt on the D port E heads and then 490 to 500 hp should be under the control of your right foot.

Matman,
Just putting this information out there and my opinion. I have a 1970 T/A with a 433CID engine with RAIV heads. The cam is a in the attachment. Engine uses RAIV exhaust manifolds with 2.45 outlet into 2.5 inch pipes. Total 31 degrees of timing all in by 3,500 RPM. I would use this cam in a 406 with e-Heads. That's just me. Here is what the cam sounds like in a 433. Makes you wonder what the lope would be in a 406. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAFVExVbLXY Boss made the video, but that is my car I am backing out. Now, I do have a '78 with a 406 with 6X#4 heads. It has the cam in the second attachment. Here is what it sounds like. Has Doug's headers with 2.5 inch pipes. Total timing is 32 degrees all in by 3,000 RPM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oP91rZkA84Y The '70 T/a Has a HR with @ 050 numbers of 230/236 in a 433. LSA is 112. The '78 T/A has a flat-Tappet with @.50 of 230/236 in a 406. LSA is 110. Pick your poison. Last edited by napster; 12-20-2023 at 02:10 PM. |

I used that cam thats in his 433 in a customers 400 with allum d-port
head's sugested from KRE I was a little hesitant but that little 400 run like a wicked 455. I was impressed with it. it's in a 67 firebird and runs like a bat out of h-ll if ya know what I mean. That's a great selection for a cam in a 400. GT |

Matman,
The intake centerline in the blue car is installed at 106 degrees not the 108 on the cam card. Thanks for the comment on the cars. Jim |
