Putting a 462 in my 89 TC1500 pick-up. Using "66" low compression d-port heads. Also a pretty damn small camshaft compared to what I am used to putting in. Very smooth idle and high vaccuum is the target. OK..now my pistons. Happen to have a set of Venolia pistons. Have the rings, pins etc. Was weighing them to check balance and all are dead on. But I then noticed 1 issue.1 piston of the 8 has the ring grooves in a different place. The piston top is about 1/8" thinner on the one then all the others. Will this really affect anything in such a low performance motor??Don't really want to wait for Venoilia to CNC another piston just for an old pull truck. Don't hold back, you aren't going to hurt my feelings on this. Throw them in or wait and get another machined??

Even though the engine is just a low-compression work-horse I'd be worried about that piston.
The thinner piston top along with the compression ring being exposed to more heat could lead to a early failure. There might even be more defects or problems with strength that you can't see. I would err on the side of caution, get a new piston. One would expect that the piston maker should make you a new one at no charge.

Oh well. Bought set used from another member, and apparently it was supposed to be a replacement piston, just a replacement for another set. It wasn't an error by Venolia, it was just from a different set. Looks like it was for a OE style replacement and the other 7 were designed for a N2O or blower motor.

for a low rpm, low buc, puller, if it looks nice, run it, my opinion.

Actally I didn't describe it that well. Yes the one piston is new and he thought it was to replace the one that must have been hurt. Venolia says they don't have the job card for the original set. The deck height mic's to be dead on (from top of pin to the crown of the piston). The ring lands just wern't dropped as much as the others. If this was going in my car, no questions I would pay to have them redone. I really should have described the situation better to begin with!!
