I installed an RA pan on my 67 GTO. Modified the pan with a drop down base and installed on a Performer RPM. Cut the hood, brace and now working on the scoop. Followed the general instructions in the Restoration guide except for cutting the brace 17" across. This was way to far; the instructions are for a 6-pack pan anyway so I cut mine to 11 inches (very front of pan width), 1/4 inch past the edge of the pan. Seems to work very well. Installed molded insulation and cut that too.

In the show books, I noticed that the RA pan foam has no indentations, I don't see how that’s possible seeing as how the brace presses and indents the foam. I was thinking that the show cars switch the foam for show. Since I am building this car for show and go I wanted to make sure I did it right. Looking thru old GTOAA and POCI articles I saw many original cars with indentations in the foam caused by the front hood brace, both 4-barrel pans and tri-power pans.

Wondering which is correct?

Does anyone know which is correct; can you show any pictures of your brace cutouts? Any help would be great….

Thanks

Brad

Brad,
Here is a picture of the hood cutout following the retro guide it is 17 inches across, also did this on my other car. I think the difference between the two years is the width on the 67 is bigger. If you could seen me a picture of the pan mods. you made as we are at the point of doing this on my sons car.
hope this helps

Sure, here are some pictures of the pan I made - it's unpainted at this point....

Pic #3.

I cut the pan with a cut off wheel. I used JB weld 2 part epoxy to bond the two pieces together. Worked very well....

Brad, I have been thinking of doing this mod to my 67. The hood was opened by a previous owner. and I have always wanted to add the RA Pan, but would have to modify one as you did to clear. Glad to see it can be done and look good at the same time. Thanks for sharing the pics.

Brad, I did the same mod to my 67 RA pan since I was using a RPM intake.

T400 - I got the drop down base from Ames. It's the HO pan.

RPM - On mine it looks like I have yet another inch before the cleaner hits the hood. I have the Performer RPM too. I was thinking of adding a 1 inch spacer as well. Are you running a spacer by chance?

Brad

Thanks

Brad

Brad, when I was running the RPM intake I did not use a spacer. Now with the Torker 2 there is a 1" spacer under the carb.

Why the switch? What didn't you like about the RPM? Do you get better performance with the Torker II?

Brad

The engine runs stronger with the T2 than it did with my RPM. No loss of low end torque and stronger high rpm pull.
