Does anyone know if there's any real difference between a N cast crank and one without. Also are these superior to the new Eagle, Scat. and Cat cranks that are out now. Thanks, Jerry

If I could afford a new after market crank I would buy it for the simple fact that we have no way of knowing how many cycles have been put on the OEM cranks. All metal parts fatigue,at some point the OEMs will have reached their cycle end.Plus the new cranks have a higher tensil strength than the OEMs.

"N" cranks are cast with nodular iron. Regular cast iron has a microstructure consisting of flakes of graphite in a sea of ferrite or pearlite. Nodular iron has a microstructure of small spheres of graphite in the ferrite/pearlite matrix. Nodular iron is much more ductile, and depending on how it is heat treated/alloyed can approach the characteristics of steel. For your crankshaft, this means that it will absorb a lot more energy before it breaks. I think the new cast cranks are nodular iron, but I'm not sure.
