I'm pretty sure only 55 and 56 used the valve covers with the plate on the passenger side.
The build date will be back by the distributor on flat area. 55-287 and 56-316

I like the water pump set up with the cooling into the front of the heads alot better than the later stuff. I would save it, but then I try to save any Pontiac engine. If it was a chevy, I'd say scrap it. But all the little stuff on that Pontiac engine will still be of use (cam retaining plate, Lifter valley cover that clears roller lifters, etc...).

If it isnt seized someone might want it for free. I have 2 347 engines (1957) that nobody wants. I hate to throw them out but its too much work to try to ship them anywhere.

The engine is probably a 317 CID. The 'H' shows it's an Automatic engine.
The last set of numbers are the serial number for the car. (Should match the car serial number) , I believe. I'd have to look it up. You might list it in the parts for sale section.

I think the car is a 1956 Pontiac, The "T" indicates it was assembled in Arlington TX, the 7 means it is a Chieftan, the 56H is the year and "H" is for Hydramatic, the last numbers are the sequential serial numbers, which started at 1001, there were 13814 of these cars assembled and that one should have been the 4925th one produced

If you were closer I would buy the short block. I actually need a 316 here in NJ.
Not worth shipping across the country though. |
