The posting by GreyFox455 reminded me of this article I found in a pawn shop magazine pile. It is the 1/70 Mechanics Illustrated driving test of a 1970 GTO 455, 4sp, 3.23 rear, convertible. I thought it was unusual for them to test a convertible, and this is a rare combo, so I thought some of you would be interested in the photos.
On factory rubber: 0-60 5.6 seconds 0-100 16.1 top speed 135 mph |

The article says it was a red car. I wonder where it is?

Seems like the top on that thing would have ripped right off at 134 MPH.
Mine is red now, but it was orginally Palisade Green, so it wasn't mine . . . . . Thanks for the posting . . . .

Matt, you and the other guy were really going that fast in a convertible? Didn't even look like there was a roll bar in that thing. Wonder what kind of tires he had . . . . stock bias-ply P225/70/14s?
What's the procedure for a blow-out at 134MPH? til next time, Harry

Even still, over 120 or so (watching the road, not the gauges) it get's pretty froggy.
quote:
Originally posted by 70 dream: What's the procedure for a blow-out at 134MPH?

You die. I was young and foolish at the time (now older ..still foolish) and will never do that again.

I would say the top has separated (ripped) from the second bow on the frame although it’s hard to tell. Usually, the second bow holds the top captive while the next bow back isn’t attached to the fabric at all. The bow at the top of the window, of course, has a tack strip and fabric attached to it. Still looking at the photo again, the top was probably damaged during a high speed run.
One thing I like is how the car looks like it’s trying to huge the ground. I think my 70 Lemans sits just a little too high. You can see space between the top of the tires and the bottom of the fender. Guess the springs are heavy duty or just wrong. Nice photos! |
