Hi All, Hey, I know this has probably been addressed, but what are the specs on the Ram Air 4 cam?????? lift, duration, centerline, etc.... Also, being new, I would like to know what is meant by an "N" crank in my '71 400 engine? Forged vs cast???

Thanks, Phil

Hey! Thanks. With that lift and 114 LSA why would you need the Rhoads lifters???

Inquiring minds!

Thanks Again, Phil

The Rhodes help with low end power loss brought on by running alot of duration. If you are running the gear, converter, and other components suited to that cam, you won't need them. But they will help idle quality and low speed drivability.

Also, no factory Pontiac cranks are forged.

Sorry to hijack your post HotRod2go...

Grand... the wife just informed me I am NOT going to the track on Thursday or Friday...prior commitments.. oh well. there's always next week .. So, with the SpeedPro 1022 cam and 215/70R14 street tires my best times were:
60 ft. 2.36
330 ft. 6.30
1/8th 9.62 @ 73.92

These times were with a 3200 rpm launch and shifting at 5000.

The best 60ft times on that night was a 2.31 but all were in the 2.3X range.

Jim

OK guys.. here we go.... drumroll please

With the new SpeedPro 1175 cam and 215/70R14 street tires my best time out of 5 passes (this is the 5th pass):
60 ft. 2.27
330 ft. 6.20
1/8th 9.49 @ 74.38

Details... very slick track.. had a heck of time figuring out how to launch it. It either wanted to smoke the tires or I had to walk it out... the posted times were with a 3000 launch to get it rolling, punching it and then 5000 rpm shifts.

Some improvement over the 1022 but not as good as I expected. I was hoping for a 9.2-9.3. Obviously drag radials would make a difference but this is a good apples to apples comparison. Have a great weekend guys!

Jim

Wow I am surprised thats all you gained,...Even factor out the traction issue your mph does not indicate all that extra hp you got with the new cam?Either way you need tires and then go back that will be the only way to see what kind of #'s you can run....If everything goes as plannedI am putting mine in on sat and racing on sunday ,and I will post the results,But atleast you improved! How did it feel trips? Was there alot stronger mid range pull or did you only race 1/8?Actually trip if you were to do the math thats almost .3 gain in the 1/4!

Hey Grand... I raced the 1/8th because that is all they have at this track. I guess .3 in the 1/4 isn't bad when you think about it... Maybe my expectation of .4 in the 1/8th was a bit unrealistic. So, this cam does pull well once I get it over 3000. Not a lot of bottom end in the ol' 389 but she pulls real well mid range up. It's right on the edge of being to much for this engine but ol' Doug Christie loves this cam in his 455!! I love the way it sounds... nice lope. Jim

Cool! Yeah it is right on the edge... are your heads ported?I think if you theoretically picked up almost .3 There's no reason why I can't see .5 IN MY 464!

The RAIV cam was used with 1.65 ratio rockers, giving .520 lift

Gonz... yea your right IF you are using 1.65's and yea we know that the original RA IV engines used 1.65's. That pretty much applies to all cams though....

Grand....my heads are pocket ported only. I think .5 is realistic in your combo.... you got lots more bottom end to play with! LOL! Let me know!! JIm

Man I hope so Trips!!!!!!! Last time you were at the track with the old cam did the car spin as much or feel as powerful down low as it did with this cam? That would give me low 13's!
I can hardly wait 5 days and counting

Oh yea, grand!! That old cam would smoke tires all day but ran out of juice at about 4k...I think the 1022 is a better all around street cam for my engine. May change it back... may not.. the 1175 cam still outperformed it but bottom end is a good thing for everyday street performance. They both have here +/-'s so it's really a toss up at this point. I think with some better heads and a bit more compression that the 1175 would really come alive. But, I'm not complaining about it considering the spec's on the engine I have. I also am hoping to go to a 3.55:1 ratio later on and I think that will help as well.
