just got my 400 all ready to bolt in ,new flexplate bolted right up, 400 turbo slid on the back of block like a glove no problems until now!
i got motor in went to hook up torque converter and the converter is hitting about 1/16 edge of ring gear?? i have approx. .220 play in the converter, call ed a few drag racing buddys i know and they told me to add washers behind bolts so torque converter will sit flush!! i added 2 .060 washers now it looks good but man its close overhanging the flywheel ring gear?? And no , flywheel not on backwards either , its overlapping ring gear about 1/16 of a inch!! washers be ok?? |

I would suspect that the flex plate is not the right one. an easy check would be to see if the starter drive will engage the ring gear. also be sure that the flexplate has 166 teeth. I think the chevy's use either 155 or 168 teeth ring gears. Good Luck.

you sure flex plate is on the right way?
it would seem to me that if the starter crashed the flexplate teeth, ever, shouldn't the worn section of the teeth be facing the starter drive gear? just my thoughts. ![]() david |

6t7gto I questioned the same thing you mentioned and I found that the rounded part of the tq converter would hit the flex plate before the 3 mount bosses would.

67cruiser, This flex plate was a replacement from another 1969 gto ys engine, the same as mine. My original flexplate has the same chamfer on the teeth and I installed it the same way.

67 Cruiser, 1 last thing. There was a shim between the crank and the flexplate when I installed it. I'm not sure how thick it was but it was less than .125" Good Luck
