I have a 72 lemans with what I blieve is a borg transmission in it. I have no reverse lights. Now it is up for inspection and I took it to a differant mechanic this time the last one just let it go but now I have to fix them. I am understanding that you need a linkage from the transmission to the steering column. There is however a spot on the tran for a switch of some sort. I read some where that this was a spark arrest switch? or some thing like that though. Now I can find nothing on that at all. The question is though will the linkage from an automatic work? (buy the way I did go to NAPA and they had no switch listed for this trans but I did get a rev switch and bolt it in there and low and behold it opens and closes in and out of reverse.
here is the linkage I found on ebay. http://i16.ebayimg.com/03/i/01/a0/19/31_1_b.JPG hope you can see that any pics of how this mounts to the tranny would be a big help. Stay tooned for more some pictures that I hope you can tell me just where dose this wire go. |

The automatic linkage won't work. At least not without a lot of work.
Manual tranny linkage worked off reverse lever. Only moved when going to reverse. You could always just twist the steering column collar to get the reverse lights to light up. Just don't forget to twist back. ![]() Or mount a microswitch and relay to the tranny so that the reverse lever triggers it.

Trans is probably Muncie. Be sure in all the wiring that all the ground straps are attached and that all (and I mean all) the linkage is operational and connects properly. It could be as simple as a bent part of the reverse/steering column linkage that may be slightly bent. It is the same linkage that rotates the steering column to be able to remove the key to lock the steering coulum. I am assuming this is an original 4 speed car. When in Reverse, check all the wires to be sure current is flowing. Should narrow it down. PS. Don't forget the fuse.
