I have a WA code 77 Formula W-72 4-speed and it has 3.23 gears.

In 78, all W-72 4-speeds had 3.42 gears.

In 78, scoops with T/A 6.6 were 400 Pontiac and 6.6 litre was 403 Olds motors.

As info all 1977 W72, 1978 W72 automatics and 1979 W72 (4-speed only) Firebirds came from the factory with 3.23:1 gears. The 1978 W72 4-speed cars came with 3.42:1 gears.

The only 1978 shaker to get a decal from the factory was those with the optional W72 engine - T/A 6.6. The base L78 400-cid and Olds 403-cid cars scoop was blank, no decal.

Hope this helps

...or unless the "T/A-6.6" was applied to the scoop by the dealer on customer request.
My '78 has original paint and decal on the scoop but is an L78 400.

Anyone looking for 1 of these as there is 1 for sale locally and it is supposed to be complete. I can/will verify the numbers if you provide them and will put you in contact with the seller. Alan

My 72 Lemans GT has a W72 engine. Put in at a later date. It has 6x-4 heads and a block cast with 500557. It has a date code of H316. My question is that this is a service replacement block. It has SR810006 on the front of the engine. Was it normal to have SR blocks for the W72. Also, what would the SR number represent?

Phil

Phil, Your SR coded #500557 block would indeed be part of a service replacement longblock or most possibly was ordered at the dealer as a fitted shortblock. Bought a similiar SR fitted '77 dated 400 several years ago. Did you have problems getting the 3 bolt boss #500557 400 block to bolt in your '72 LeMans GT???

Like Alan have access to several W72 engines or short blocks. Close by in my warehouse are an extra '78 WC & a '79 Pwh.

I have a question, i have a 77 SE T/A with a T/A 6.6 engine and it came with 6.6 litre on the shaker from the factory.I'm the second owner of the car and have owned it for 20 years and i knew the original owner and it has the factory paint on it.

Pontiacguiy, sometimes mistakes can happen at the factory, however, they are rare and should not be considered correct or how Pontiac actually intended the cars to be built. My post about correct shaker decal usage is how Pontiac intended the cars to be built.

Hope this helps
