Hello,
I have a 1979 Trans Am (Olds 403 engine) with problems starting it after it's been running. The battery will be fully charged, but if I turn it off after running it for 10 or 15 minutes, it won't start back up. It acts like the battery is almost dead, slowly turning the engine over, but then it runs out of juice. If I wait a couple hours, it starts right up. I've already changed the battery and solenoid but still no help. Any ideas? Thanks, Tom |

Heat soak.........get a heat shield for the starter. One of the wraps from Summit or the like will work fine.

Get a good starter. I'm using a Mondello starter for 455 olds. Works great. Might try a 455 starter. My starter is wrapped too

Yeah I had a 403 car, mildly built with headers and heat soak was a problem until I used a good starter with a wrap.

Also replace the solenoid spring with a heavy duty spring available through GM. This will make the solenoid engage when Hot. Then put a shield on the solenoid. Make sure you have a higher amp battery.
I even have bigger battery cables. I run a 455 Pont. with RA3 Exhaust manifolds and air cond. It never fails to start. thepontiacman@yahoo.com

If you ever find yourself in a situation where the hot soak problem has you stranded-take some water or any cool liquid(Coke,Pepsi, etc) and pour it on the starter solenoid. Anything that will cool the starter will get you going.I have even crawled under my car and spit the cold liquid onto the starter solenoid! It looks really retarded-but it works! Beats sitting around until the damn thing cools down!
