You might want to post this in "Big Pontiac Parts Wanted".
I wasn't aware of more than one starter for '55- power steering or not.

Well, I'll be darned! Hollander interchange manual does show a unique starter for '55 with power steering. I learned something today!

Only difference between the stock starter and this one is the drive housing (end bell) that mounts to the transmission. These starters were also used in 55-59 GMC Trucks that had V-8 (Pontiac) engines. I have a NOS one (still in the box) that I picked up on eBay a few years ago. Just waiting for the right place to put it. It positions the solenoid at about 5 o'clock if you are looking at the starter from the front.

The drive housing is GM part # 1934751. It is used on GM starter 1107681 which replaces 1107655. Used on all 1/2, 3/4, 1 ton and some larger V-8 (Pontiac) equipped 55-59 GMC trucks as well as 270 and 302 cubic inch 6 cylinder models of the same trucks equipped with manual transmissions.

I have finally procured the starter in question. The difference is not in the end bell, its on the other side of the starter and it is just the repositioning of the feed coming out of the starter onto the solenoid. this is a one year starter only, I'll try to post some pics of the two of them soon as I have both examples.
