The guy is telling me it is a 455 in a 72 Grandville.
I found a block code of XR. The intake is a 526213 screwed up looking 2bbl intake that looks like it should have a 4bbl on it. The oil filter comes out the side of the block not straight down.
The oil dipstick comes up behind the left valve cover.

This screams 301 to me. Am I right? I don't want to tell the guy he is full of sh!t until I am 110% sure it is not a strange 455. I have never really been around 301's to be sure.

Thanks Patrick

Sounds like a 301 to me. The oil filter sticking straight out is the most obvious sign. On the drivers front of the block, in front of the freeze plug, check to see if the displacement is cast there. Several blocks have this. The screwed up intake sounds like the one for the Rochester dualjet that was installed on 301s.

If it were a 455 all you would have to do is look at the side of the block and it should have 455 cast right into it. But if you are taking bets, I'm siding with you - never seen a 455 as you described, none of mine were like that.

I think you are correct, That sounds like a 301 to Me also. The headcast number is 01 for a 301 the block code is PXR for a 79 can you take a wire brush and clean off the block code better? The only XR code I find listed in Pete McCarthy's book Pontiac Muscle car Performance 1955-1979 is for a 1973 175hp 350 with #46 heads and a two barrel carb. The only block I know of with the oil filter sticking straight out of the block is the 301.

In addition, a 455 installed in a Grandville would have a four barrel. Several other visual cues exists also. What type of distributor, A/C compressor, timing tab, harmonic balancer etc?

The oil dipstick is the quickest que I use. The 301 (unless there was some othe weird combo) is the only one I have seen with the dipstick going behind the flywheel to the pan at the rear.

Quick check - the head deck just about meets the timing cover. All other blocks there is room between the deck and timing cover for the stamped code.

It is definitely not a 455. The 301 and 265 (a wimpier version of the 301) are the only ones that had the dipstick that came out behind the LR valve cover and have the oil filter located like you described.

I just did a swap on a 301 so those details are fresh in my mind. Either the guy selling it is full of it or don't know his Pontiacs very well.

Hard to believe someone deliberately swapped a 301 into a 4600lb GrandVille. Its in that car now?
There was a 455 2barrel motor in 72 I think I have only seen one in a station wagon
or maybe there was some confusion on what it really came out of. If its been sitting around for a while the history can get muddy. Definately a 301 or 265 though

Yes the engine is in a 72 Grandville Vert.
I looked at the Wallace site and sure enough it's a 301

Here is a pic of the engine and the car.

Car 2 there are some usable parts on her. To bad she was junked. I also found a book on the back "How to tune for good fuel milage" lol I would think the best place to start would be have an engine that can move the car.

Thanks for the help guys
