I have a 69 Firebird w/ a Currie 9 inch (stock dimensions). I don't want to mini-tub or relocate the rear multileaf springs. Anyone know what the widest 17 inch American Racing Torq Thrust II's would fit (including backspacing)? What would be the widest tires (35-40 aspect)? Thank you for your help!

I will be interested to see the responce. I also am looking at this option in the latest copy of super chevy there is a 69 camaro with 17 inch torque thrust II rims. What brake are you running in the rear of the car?

The most accurate way to figure this outis to put the rear axle on jack stands (both sides) pull a wheel off, put a straight edge on the the mouning surface, and measure to the inside and outside of the wheel well. Subtract about two inches from the total for your maximum tire cross section. Subtract about two inches from the cross section for rim width. For back space, subtract about two inches or so from the measurement to the inside of the wheel well. It makes it a lot easier if you draw the wheel well on graph paper. Hope this helps.

Bill gives some sound advice, you will have to carefully measure and 'play engineer' to really find out what you need. I would also add that mounting a bare stock rim on the rear and loading up the trunk with weight will help you see visually how much wider you can go.
The stock rim will help give you a reference point for width and backspacing. Loading the trunk almost to the point of bottoming the suspension will show you what the clearances would be on a bump you might (will) encounter. In this thread I gave some help to another board member on a similar subject, you might want to read through it for some more insight: http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...1&m=2446059391 Good luck.

I have 255/50/16's on my car, mounted in 8" 0-offset wheels (GTA Repops), and I run 10" M/T Slicks at the track on 8" 0-offset Weld Pro Stars.
I say you could probably go bigger if you increase the backspacing (move the wheels inboard) about .5-1" depending on leaf spring clearance. The street tires clear the quarter panels just fine, but there's only about 2 fingers worth of clearance on the slicks. |

Been a while since I've had a chance to check out the forum. Thanks much to all of you for your help! You've given me hope. Time to do some "engineering" and continue my quest in search of the widest rims/tires.
