Couple of us Pontiac nuts were setting around last night shooting the **** and a question came up. "I'm poing to install a transmission cooler in series with the radiator cooler. Should I install it before the radiator or after?"
My answer was "If you are installing it to help solve a engine temperature problem (remove some of the heat from the transmission fluid before it gets to the radiator)then install it before the radiator. If you are installing it to protect the transmission, then install it after. This will give the maximum cooling to the fluid." Then the question came up "But what about the winter, can the fluid get too cold?" My answer to that is it can't get any colder than when you first start up after setting for a couple of hours, and that doesn't hurt the tranny, so it shouldn't be a big deal." Now, what's your opinion on these two questions (and the rational behind them)? Ed |

Makes sense to me. I don't think you would have to worry about it getting to cold. My 2-cents

Yep, I agree. Loc'n depends on what problem you're trying to address, as you said.
As for running the tranny fluid too cool, it shouldn't matter in the short term, but could there be long term problems (fluid or mechanical) associated with running less than "design" fluid temperatures? Are there such temperatures? Or is cooler always better? |

they always told us that optimun trans temp was around 250 deg . we always ran the cooler before the radiator. lets face it, if the engine gets to that temp it's hurt anyhow.if the trans doesn't get fully warmed up wear is accelerated. mike

I lived this quandry: First had the spare cooler follow the Radiator, then bypassed the radiator. It's been 6 years. The Upstate NY cold winter didn't seem to hurt the TH400/10", as it has hit the tracks this season without whining.
Probably Ok to use the remote cooler, particularly in light of our [Poncho croud] knowledge to use efficient converters, even at 10". Q: Hmmm, should I run the P/S fluid through the Radiator cooler? Naw.

I don't run the tranny cooler through the transmission at all. I run an over rated stack plate oil cooler with direct air flow thru it. Never had a problem so far.

my question is, where do some of you guys mount the trans cooler in the engine compartment. i've always mounted it on the grille side of the radiator. if i don't want the heat of the cooler going through the fins of the radiator, would it be best to mount it on the fan side of the radiator. it seems like anywhere else under the hood and it would be in the way, or you would not get adequate airflow through it or be inline for road debris to hit the cooler.

Install the coolers in parallel. This accomplishes two things: 1) flow capacity of the coolers is almost doubled and 2) trans fluid termerature will be moderated for all weather conditions.

but where in the engine compartment is the best place for the cooler.

My 69Bird Tranny cooler is set in front of the passenger wheelwell liner. I suspended it from the fender top-lip with 2 plastic ties, and a single metal strap/bracket to the wheel well liner.
Firebird; Air flows from the Rad-support zone, around each fender bulge, and into the engine area. Street/Strip, 8 years and no issues.
