Haven't been able to find axle code on rear axle tube. Factory invoice shows special order for axle that's a $2.11 option (Code 362). It's a 12 bolt. Any ideas what axle ratio it is.

Hate to tell you this, but if it's a 12 bolt, it didn't leave the factory in your car. 12 Bolt rears first appeared in GTO's in 1970, and then only in 455 equipped cars. This continued in both 71 and 72 (not sure about after that).
The 362 code means that a gear other than the standard for the equipment in the car was ordered. I had a 68 convertible that had a 256 gear ratio in it and a 362 code on the build sheet. The guy that ordered the car had a long highway commute and didn't want the car screaming the whole way.

Check all over both sides of the axle tube. I had a '70 12 bolt that was stamped on the front side, not the back. I also read that sometimes the stamps are hidden by the brake line.

Everything in my 1969 convertible is pretty much #'s matching with the exception of the rear, which is a 12 bolt and I always had a hard time finding the code as well. It will be interesting to see what GM make of rear really is in my car, I'm going to really look at it now. Everyone always says the 12 bolts are better anyway than the 10 so I will probably leave it alone for now.

Gear?
At sixty Mph what is the rpm at the tach? that will give you a ballpark. Or mark the tire and the driveshaft and count rotations of each.

Your car most likely left the factory with that 12 Bolt... the 12 bolt that most people are referring to is the Chevrolet Style rear end, it has an inverted V on the differential cover. Very deeply embossed.
The "other" 12 bolt is the Pontiac 12 bolt... it is not the same and is not any where close to as strong as the other one. I have a 68 Lemans with the 2:56 rear and it also has that rear end.

No Tempest before the 1970 model left the factory with any 12-bolt rear. If there's one in an earlier car, it has been swapped.
The only Pontiac 12-bolt is the big-car rear, which had a 12-bolt ring and a 10-bolt cover, opposite to the A-body Olds 10-bolt ring with 12-bolt cover. But that was an Olds rear only, not Pontiac. And the full-size rear won't fit A-bodies. |

speaking about 12 bolt rears, a friend of mine has a all original 1969 SJ 428 GP that has a 12 bolt rear end in it. its an auto, a/c, fully loaded car. and it was a one owner car. nothing has ever been alltered on this car. I guess pontiac did use the C axle, or 12 bolt rear before 1970. thanks
