I got a 1967 GTO HT 400 engine 400 transmission about a year ago. I have no idea how old the present timing chain is. I plan to change the chain this winter. The car is mostly original. What would you recommend for a replacement chain and gears and should I replace the waterpump while I'm at it. Anything else to be aware of. Thanks - Dusty 67.

Dusty,

I did my '66 LeMans timing chain and water pump a couple of years ago.

If your engine is stock, I would go with a stock single roller timing chain. You can get this at any auto parts store. While you have it apart, I would definitely change the water pump. Also, I would buy a brand new water pump. It may be a bit more expensive, but in my opinion worth it(I hate to redo work).

Good luck

Dan

Even on a stock engine I would buy the best quality timing set. I would get a Cloyes True Roller, I use them on both stock and performance build-ups. Even though it costs about $80 it is nice to have the peace of mind you get from a part that won't give up or have chain stretch early like the cheaper sets. Definitely get a new water pump as well as new divider plates that go behind the pump if they are corroded.

Get a good set. Much easier and cheaper than replacing pushrods and/or valves.

Get the new water pump plates whether you need them or not. They are cheap today. Once they quit making them they will be hard to find and price will go up. Save the old one after cleaning. How bout new hoses belts and thermostat while you are there?
