Default Does a Locker give the rear more strenght?

I was wondering since my 8.2 inch has a locker of unknown origin. Do these give them a little more strength to the case/gear area? Thanks and CHEERS!!!!!

I was not aware of any Detroit Lockers offered for an 8.2" GM rear.

Powertrax has a locker for the BOP 8.2 rear. The one positive as far as strength is that there are no spider gears to break.

I've been running the Powertrax in my Lemans for a couple of years and no breakage so far. (Knock on wood! ) This is a 4100 lb. car with a 462, 3.08 gears and M/T ET STreet Radials that runs low 13's

I thought the 8.2 ran a cone type posi. The 8.2s that I have seen break, has wrung the pinion off. So, I would believe it is more the gear set being weak vs the carrier.

It is only as strong as your axles are (splines?).

The only locker I know of is the one I had in school. Sorry when I get a joke in my head, yaknow.

I run a 8.5 Richmond 28 spline spool (I got for free), Moser non c-clip axles, cut down and resplined to 28 splines, Nascar reject 3.73 gears(cheap) 9.5" QTP Hoosiers.. 504hp in a 4310# car.

Well this post didn't pertain at all sorry

No, the MAJOR problem with Pontiac 8.2's (& '64-67 Buick 8.2's) is the lack of pinion support in the front of the housing. Not axles, not factory posi units, or for that matter the 8.2" diam of the ring gear. Small diam pinion bearings, close together in a gray iron housing allow pinion to rise slightly when loaded with major torque. This is not good, ring & pinion should never get in a bind, if they do, they often shell. Better designed rears are designed to keep this defection at a minimum for much higher torque loads.

Pontiac remedied the 8.2 hsg flex condition, to a certain extent, with the rare Pontiac nodular 8.2 housings in '67-early '71 HD Safe-T-Track rears. This was, however, not enough for the 8.2 to hold up behind 4spd high torque 455 mills, thus A-body Pontiacs from '70-72 received strengthened 12 bolts, while 455 Buick & Olds A-bodys in '71 & 72 received the stronger 8.5 A-body rear. Both the 8.5 & 12 bolt share larger diam pinion bearings & both benefit heavily from ton of aftermarket parts. The Pontiac 8.2 is limited at best.

Thanks to everyone who is responding and ol pinion head YOU ROCK man. I really appreciate your knowledge and insite. I had to buy this rear end because I was in a jam with my other one broken. I scoured junkyards and newspapers. The only other option was internet with high shipping.I got this rear end for 300$ with locker and aftermarket axles {supposed to be strange axles} But I have no way to verify that. It was local and from a friend. Saved on shipping plus it was in my old lemans so it had some nostalga to it. It lived on a strip car {my old lemans was a 1/4 mile car} with a built BOP th 350 that would bark the gears. The engine was a warmed over 400 {bored and I dont know if it had a 455 crank} Ram air III engine. This rear end held up fine with that engine. My engine now isnt near the same power so I hope to get a few years of service. eventually I will replace it with a Dana 60 or 9 inch when I add my 455 motor in the future.
