Question Suggestions for more power?

Hey everyone I'm looking for some suggestions for more power. My set up is a 400 .060 over Keith Black pistons running 9:8:1, stock connectiong rods with stock crank. RA IV cam (plus I was wondering if my cam makes any power after 5500? would it be worth the titainium retainers?. RA IV oil pump. Holley high volume mechanical fuel pump. Top is end is recently rebuilt #16 heads with comp cams roller rockers 1.75 ratio with matching comp cam connecting rods. Performer manifold with an 800 CFM carburator. Ignition is an Flamthrower HEI with 9mm Taylor Wires. This goes through a stock stall turbo 400 but that is the only thing stock about the tranny, its beefy. I think stock stall is around 1800 RPM. Should I go with a bigger stall converter? I mean don't get me wrong this engine is freakin' sweet, it makes mince meat of every Evolution and STi that I come across, plus I just raced my buddy in a 68' chevelle with a pumped 454 with a 4 speed and it seemed that I was pulling on him till he missed his 3rd gear. But some suggestions would be great and thanks for reading through all of this too.
thanks again

I do belive that cam will make power right up to 6500 RPM which you may want to watch because if your running a cast rod i hear it is safer to stay under 5500 RPM. Titanium spring retainers might be a little much and you could probably put that money on a 3000 stall torque converter with say 3.90 gears. with that cam you are looking at over 80 deg. overlap and will not pull much below 3000 RPM which is not so bad with a manual but autos will need the converter and gear. Cliff Ruggles has posted some information regarding this on these forums so mabey try a "ram air IV cam in 400" to find these posts which i am sure will be of value to you. Good luck

A lot of people like Rhodes lifters with the RAIV cam in a 400 (I have that setup). Theory is that the lifters reduce the effective overlap at lower RPM, giving you back some torque.
Getting the carb carefully tuned (if it isn't already) would be good. I quite fancy buying myself one of these: http://www.widebandcommander.com/ as it would tone in nicely with my other new gauges...
Depends how much $$$ you want to spend though really doesn't it? Dropping the CR to 8.5:1 and fitting twin turbos would be sweet, but I'm guessing over-budget?

3000 stall sounds like a lot of stall though. seems like it really comes alive around 2200 to 2500.

I would suggest 3,500 stall. What are your rear end gears?

Ditch the Performer for a Performer RPM.

Do you have headers? Didn't see that mentioned.

Port those 16s at home, using Jim Hand's book as a guidepost. Power is in the cylinder heads.

Titanium retainers? That won't add power, and won't help anything if your valves aren't floating.

Which 800 carburetor? If it is Edelbrock's Performer, I bet there is power to be foind by switching to an 800 Q-Jet or a Holley.

Is this a street/strip car?

Try 3.55 to 3.73 gears. 2000 footbrake, 3200 flash stall converter. RPM intake, 700 to 800 cfm Holley or Q-jet. The rhodes will work, but they are a little noisy. Perhaps you could advance the cam 2* and see if that makes the car pick up some torque. Headers and 3" exhaust will help. What heads are you using? Some port work would help, expecially with the big lift from that cam and the 1.75 rockers. With stock rods, you want to make power below 5500. Don't wind it up higher, adjust the combo to make more power from 3000-5500.

I can't answer that; the lifters were installed as part of a full rebuild. new cam, new intake, rotating assembly balanced... and I don't have any time-slips for the new combo anyway. (fwiw, i have a 3.55 gear and an RPM intake)

I can't say I have noticed the new lifters at all, but then again the exhaust is horribly loud (and getting louder as it rusts away)... there may be a bit of clicking at idle, but at anything above that all i can hear is the roar of the engine, the bushings squeeking, and the wind-noise! lovely car.

its a performer 800 edlebrock. Hooker Competition headers (super comps were to low and got smashed) with 2 1/2'' two chamber flowmasters, heads are #16 stock rebuilt except for roller rockers and pushrods, gears are highway I think they are 3.08's with open diff, but I wanted to kinda keep it more something I can take on the highway, I wouldn't want to go any higher than 3.55. and I don't think that I would mind the rhodes noise, I don't think that I could hear it lol!
