Default 1978 Trans am colors

I have a platinum trans am. I have not seen many around. I believe it is the same color as the 10th anniversary trans ams. Does anyone know of how many cars were done in each color, such as production numbers of 1972 trans ams. I have seen a number of blue and red trans ams and of coarse many black ones but silver seems uncommon. Are there other uncommon colors for 1978 trans ams. Thanks.

Siler is a common color, I have seen my fair share of silver cars. black red and blue seem to be the most popular as you stated.
1972 t/a has a run of 1286 cars
450 there abouts ate stick
the other 836 or so are auto

the total is correct, the breakdown is not correect but a close proximity.

I almost bought a platinum one, but the seller and I could not agree to terms. I bought a gold 78 instead. Platinum looks good on these cars. The unique thing about the platinum one I almost bought was the wheels. They weren't the honeycomb style I was used to seeing on TAs of this era. They were more of a solid chrome or polished aluminum wheel. The guy assured me they were stock.

Check out this web site. It doesn't give production numbers, but it lists all of the colors:

Default 1978 Trans Am Paint

Currently no specific production numbers for each Trans am color has been found. However a Pontiac Sales Information memo dated March 1 1978 states the following;

Most popular exterior colors through January 1978

Trans Am
#1 Starlight Black 34.2% of total
#2 Martinique Blue 16.9% of total
#3 Cameo White 14.9% of total
#4 Platinum 13.1% of total
#5 Mayan Red 9.2% of total

Hope this helps

Those are interesting numbers John as to what were popular colors in 1978. Does anyone know if all of the hood birds are the same for a non special edition trans am. The car I bought looks to have a 79 bird on it. The owner claims it is original. The wings are filled in with charcoal, red and black. Stencils and stripes makes a comment about late 78 trans ams stating some had the newer style bird such as the 79 t/a. I am not sure about that one. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks.

It my understanding that all Solar Gold car got the newer style hoodbird, whether they were Y88 cars or not. All other 78 models used the older style of hoodbird. All 78 models used the newer "block" style lettering for the TRANS AM decals.

If you add it all up there is 11.3% left. That would leave 11.2% for the gold ones and .1% for the yellow one I have in my garage.
